Responsible for member, retiree, and employer outreach and education, legislative affairs, media relations, and internal and external communications initiatives for a statewide public employee retirement system with 100,000 members and retirees. Ran the company’s chain of four weekly newspapers. Responsible for editorial department planning and production. Managed five-person staff and numerous freelancers. Oversaw freelance budget. Worked with publisher and VP/news on budgeting and strategic priorities. Led effort to integrate production with the daily paper without damaging the weeklies’ strong brand identity. Served as the public face of the Cabinet Press.

Supervised editors of daily Telegraph’s features sections and coordinated content and production of the award-winning Sunday edition. Worked with staff to plan, edit and design short- and long-term news and feature stories, many of which included multimedia elements. Managed a six-person features staff. Oversaw freelance budget. Served on newspaper’s editorial board, meeting with local, state and national leaders. In addition to newsroom responsibilities, also teamed with new media, marketing and circulation departments to help the identify growth areas and measure the success of new initiatives.

Second-in-command of a 45-person newsroom. Responsibilities included coordinating investigative reporting and special projects and overseeing production. Other responsibilities included working closely with individual section editors to improve overall quality and consistency of the paper, serving as a member of the editorial board and dealing with the community. Served as executive editor in charge of the editorial department for 9 months before stepping down for personal/family reasons.

Created an award-winning Web site from scratch. Responsible for all aspects of the site, from design and content to budgeting and traffic measurement. Worked closely with newsroom to integrate the Web site into the culture of the daily paper. Also worked with other departments on developing marketing and sales strategies.

Served as lifestyle editor, copy editor and regional editor.

Started as sports editor at the Webster Times, a weekly. Hired as sports editor of the Southbridge News, a daily, and later promoted to news editor.
