Safety Officer onboard Thomson Cruise vessels. Responsible for planned maintenance and inspection of all FFA and LSA; crew training and emergency functions; accident/incident investigation; work place safety including risk assessment; point of contact for crew on all safety related matters, etc.

As 2nd Officer within Holland America I am part of the senior group of deck officers and have sailed recently as the most senior watchkeeping officer. Other duties as 2/O include being the officer in charge of stability and also the ship's training officer, responsible for the training of up to 600 crew members. I am also the DSTO for up to 3 cadets at a time. At this stage I am fully conversant with all bridge equipment and procedures and report directly to the Staff Captain.

As 3rd Officer on Holland America Line ships my responsibilities include bridge watchkeeping as officer in charge of the watch; administration of crew emergency functions, department work and rest hours, certificate management and audit compliance, etc. Also many of the other functions inherent to the job of a deck officer including mooring, training, drills, passage planning, etc.

First position after having qualified as an OOW. Duties included navigational watchkeeping both as assistant and as head of watch; assisting with maintenance of lifesaving and safety systems; overseeing mooring operations; gangway/security; crew training.

Training to become a fully licensed deck officer by following a Foundation Degree in Marine Operations at Warsash Maritime Academy under sponsorship from Holland America Line. Training includes a mixture of phases at college and onboard the company vessels understudying the officers onboard.

Quality control on prefabricated office/canteen/toilet/storage units. Ensuring that the quality of the product was of the required standard and in accordance with the technical drawings.

Started my own business with two other people. The business was a sports bar/members club with 8 pool tables. The company was limited by liability and as Managing Director I oversaw the day to day operations of the entire business.
