As 2nd Officer within Holland America I am part of the senior group of deck officers and have sailed recently as the most senior watchkeeping officer. As 3rd Officer on Holland America Line ships my responsibilities include bridge watchkeeping as officer in charge of the watch; administration of crew emergency functions, department work and rest hours, certificate management and audit compliance, etc. Also many of the other functions inherent to the job of a deck officer including mooring, training.

Training to become a fully licensed deck officer by following a Foundation Degree in Marine Operations at Warsash Maritime Academy under sponsorship from Holland America Line. Training includes a mixture of phases at college and onboard the company vessels understudying the officers onboard.
