About Marva Williams

Marva E. Williams has spent her career in the field of community economic development. Her work includes applied research, policy development and advocacy, non-profit management, real estate development and finance, and philanthropy. Marva is currently working as a consultant and adjunct lecturer. Her consulting includes assisting local governments collaborate with CDFIs, researching innovative safety net programs to reduce the poverty rate in Philadelphia and drafting demographic analysis for the City's application for community service block grants from the US Department of Health and Human Services. Marva was recruited to the Public Banking Advisory Committee which provides advice to the consultants studying the feasibility of a Philadelphia public bank. Marva enjoys her work with undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Pennsylvania and Rutgers University-Camden. In addition, Marva engaged in applied research studies.Before the Chicago Fed, Marva was the Senior Program Officer at Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) of Chicago from 2007 to 2011. Her responsibilities included program management, fundraising, budgeting and financial management. She launched a new community initiative to provide technical and financial assistance to community based organizations in Chicago. Prior to Chicago LISC, Marva was the Senior Vice President of the Woodstock Institute for over 10 years. Her responsibilities included coalition building, development of policies supportive of affordable financial services, and research on innovative community development finance practices. Marva was involved in many community development finance efforts. She was a member of the Community Advisory Council of the Federal Reserve Bank, and volunteered at numerous organizations.Marva holds a Master of Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Pittsburgh and a Ph.D. in Urban Planning and Public Policy from Rutgers University’s Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy.
