I left as an employee during the Duke buyout but continued on as an outside contractor to Duke to provide engineering services for legacy projects.Completed my EIT engineering apprenticeship and gained my California P.E.Performed electrical engineering work on a variety of general EE projects including:* Electrical design for new construction fuel stations (class I locations)* Electrical design for new construction natural gas compressor stations* Designed electrical low voltage upgrades to utility power generation plants* Electrical design of stack gas monitoring systems for utility power generation plantsEnergy Storage SimulationI took part in a team of software developers working on an application to simulate the operation of a DC reactor control system under battery power. Software simulated battery discharge over a four-hour period in MS excel to determine available voltage over time. This was used to determine how voltage reduction would affect the operation of various DC control systems, relays, and indicator lights needed to safely shut down a commercial nuclear reactor. Overall this period of employment provided a broad introduction to technical electrical engineering work. I separated to pursue opportunities in software development.

  • Weco, Woodside Electronics Corporation “The Science Of Optical Sorting”
    Tomato Sorter Field Service Technician
Weco, Woodside Electronics Corporation “The Science Of Optical Sorting” Jun 1990 - Sep 1990
    Woodland, California, Us
Summer job during college. Provided field service for automated tomato sorters installed on tomato harvesting equipment. Tomato sorters used color vision systems to provide color sorting and reject green tomatoes, dirt, and snakes from the incoming stream. Field service involved driving a car through tomato fields to chase down a moving tomato harvester. A difficult task considering that you had to stay on top of the tomato rows that were covered in discarded tomato plants that tended to get wrapped around the axles while driving 40 MPH. The work was interesting and I developed a great deal of respect for the people who work in the fields. It's hard, hot, dirty, dangerous, and monotonous work. The people were great and I enjoyed working with them. I drove over 18,000 miles in three months, worked a lot of overtime, lived in some dumpy company housing, and had a fun time.

  • Us Navy
    Fire Control Technician
    Us Navy 1981 - 1987
    Washington, Dc, Us
Boot Camp in beautiful San Diego. I can't recommend a crewcut in the summer in San Diego, your sunburned ears will never forgive you.Submarine school in Groton CT where I graduated top of my class. C School for the Mk 88 Mod 1 ballistic missile fire control system in Dam Neck VA where I received several awards for scholarship. Yes, they actually had "Sailors and dogs keep off the grass" signs in the city of VA Beach. Graduated from C school and was advanced to E4, one of the perks of the 6-year enlistment.Assigned to the USS Andrew Jackson, SSBN 619. Submarine duty operating and maintaining a ballistic missile fire control system. Advanced to E5. Work on the submarine consisted of electronic system troubleshooting, maintenance, and generally being prepared for the worst. When not doing that there was training, lots of training. I'm very well trained in 1960s electronics. Back to Dam Neck VA to learn more about the operation and maintenance of fire control systems and advanced test equipment. Preparing for a support position on a submarine tenderTransferred to the USS Canopus AS-34, a submarine tender to work in the Fire Control shop. Received a number of awards for performance along with a deep feeling that the surface Navy was not a place for me.Honorably discharged from the Navy at end of enlistment. The two happiest days are the day you enlist and the day you get out. It was a worthwhile experience. In the Navy you are either on a submarine or on a target. Choose well.
