Senior Electrical EngineerPure Power Engineering Nov 2018 - Dec 2021Hoboken, New Jersey, UsSupported internal engineering teams, provided training on design and equipment, and provided engineering support to client projects. Subject matter expert for codes and standards, PV system design, energy storage design, and fleet EV charging design. I performed pre-engineering and post-construction site walk-downs and 3rd party reviews of engineering designs. -
PrincipalHamon Engineering, Inc. Jan 2005 - Nov 2018Founder, principal, and chief engineer of Hamon Engineering, Inc, a provider of professional engineering services to the power industry with a specialty in photovoltaic systems, energy storage, and medium voltage. Starting and running a small engineering firm has allowed me to develop a broad range of skills in business operations. Most of my work consists of working with various clients who need power system engineering performed, manufacturers who need consulting on electrical codes and standards relating to their products, and third-party engineering work where I review designs and finished construction for owners, utilities, and financiers. In the performance of these projects, I have been involved in early feasibility studies to commissioning including:Developing project proposals and estimatesPreparing responses to RFQs and RFPsProject management, including hiring and supervising subcontractors, and meeting the client's expectations. Project site visits for pre-construction site review, construction observation, and post-construction commissioning witnessing.

Electrical EngineerAbb Impell Corp., Vectra Technologies, Inc., Duke Engineering And Services Jul 1993 - Jun 1996Hired by ABB Impell, which was bought by VECTRA Technologies, Inc., and subsequently bought by Duke Engineering and Services. I left as an employee during the Duke buyout but continued on as an outside contractor to Duke to provide engineering services for legacy projects.Completed my EIT engineering apprenticeship and gained my California P.E.Performed electrical engineering work on a variety of general EE projects including:* Electrical design for new construction fuel stations (class I locations)* Electrical design for new construction natural gas compressor stations* Designed electrical low voltage upgrades to utility power generation plants* Electrical design of stack gas monitoring systems for utility power generation plantsEnergy Storage SimulationI took part in a team of software developers working on an application to simulate the operation of a DC reactor control system under battery power. Software simulated battery discharge over a four-hour period in MS excel to determine available voltage over time. This was used to determine how voltage reduction would affect the operation of various DC control systems, relays, and indicator lights needed to safely shut down a commercial nuclear reactor. Overall this period of employment provided a broad introduction to technical electrical engineering work. I separated to pursue opportunities in software development.

Researcher, Electrical And Electronic Engineering DepartmentCalifornia Polytechnic State University Sep 1992 - Oct 1993San Luis Obispo, Ca, UsDeveloped simulation models using Maxwell 3D software of magnetic fields created by power transmission and distribution conductors in substations. Used the results to model conductor configurations and shielding to minimize magnetic field strength. This was a masters thesis project that was funded by Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. -
Graduate Teaching AssistantCalifornia Polytechnic State University Jan 1992 - Oct 1993San Luis Obispo, Ca, UsAs a graduate student, I taught undergraduate engineering lab courses in power systems and power electronics to support my addiction to food and living inside. -
Researcher, Power Quality LaboratoryCalifornia Polytechnic State University Jan 1992 - Jun 1992San Luis Obispo, Ca, UsPerformed research on the effects of harmonic voltage and current on protection relays used in power systems. Created a computer simulation of an over-current relay using the EPRI Electromagnetic Transients Program and used the results to study the effects of harmonics on protection relay operation. Project funded by Pacific Gas & Electric Company -
Engineering InternPacific Gas And Electric Company Jun 1991 - Sep 1991Oakland, California, UsSummer intern position in Technical Systems Analysis Group, ENCON Business UnitAssisted in the performance of electromagnetic field studies for clients. Installed and beta tested various EPRI software.Performed field examination of small hydro units scattered around Northern California. -
Tomato Sorter Field Service TechnicianWeco, Woodside Electronics Corporation “The Science Of Optical Sorting” Jun 1990 - Sep 1990Woodland, California, UsSummer job during college. Provided field service for automated tomato sorters installed on tomato harvesting equipment. Tomato sorters used color vision systems to provide color sorting and reject green tomatoes, dirt, and snakes from the incoming stream. Field service involved driving a car through tomato fields to chase down a moving tomato harvester. A difficult task considering that you had to stay on top of the tomato rows that were covered in discarded tomato plants that tended to get wrapped around the axles while driving 40 MPH. The work was interesting and I developed a great deal of respect for the people who work in the fields. It's hard, hot, dirty, dangerous, and monotonous work. The people were great and I enjoyed working with them. I drove over 18,000 miles in three months, worked a lot of overtime, lived in some dumpy company housing, and had a fun time. -
DigitizerEarthcalc, Inc Jul 1989 - Sep 1989Summer job digitizing civil drawings and maps into a computer program that computed cut and fill requirements for earthwork development.

Fire Control TechnicianUs Navy 1981 - 1987Washington, Dc, UsBoot Camp in beautiful San Diego. I can't recommend a crewcut in the summer in San Diego, your sunburned ears will never forgive you.Submarine school in Groton CT where I graduated top of my class. C School for the Mk 88 Mod 1 ballistic missile fire control system in Dam Neck VA where I received several awards for scholarship. Yes, they actually had "Sailors and dogs keep off the grass" signs in the city of VA Beach. Graduated from C school and was advanced to E4, one of the perks of the 6-year enlistment.Assigned to the USS Andrew Jackson, SSBN 619. Submarine duty operating and maintaining a ballistic missile fire control system. Advanced to E5. Work on the submarine consisted of electronic system troubleshooting, maintenance, and generally being prepared for the worst. When not doing that there was training, lots of training. I'm very well trained in 1960s electronics. Back to Dam Neck VA to learn more about the operation and maintenance of fire control systems and advanced test equipment. Preparing for a support position on a submarine tenderTransferred to the USS Canopus AS-34, a submarine tender to work in the Fire Control shop. Received a number of awards for performance along with a deep feeling that the surface Navy was not a place for me.Honorably discharged from the Navy at end of enlistment. The two happiest days are the day you enlist and the day you get out. It was a worthwhile experience. In the Navy you are either on a submarine or on a target. Choose well.
