I love my work in nonprofit. My professional mantra is “If you don’t have mission, you don’t have money.” The mission is the Rosetta Stone of any nonprofit organization creating meaning and fostering understanding in a community. My personal call to action is “Give me a mission that includes helping others to achieve their potential and I will transform lives!” To me, there is nothing better than working with people who are actively engaged to meet a vision. Keeping people engaged and on course depends upon relationships and leadership. I develop resonant relationships based on honesty and transparency with individuals, teams, community leaders, state and local agencies to make things happen that further human potential. My leadership philosophy is based on five simple elements: Encourage diversity of thought. Beyond gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality or political and religious beliefs, diversity is about thinking differently. Diverse teams engender strong learning environments. Servant leadership. Power never rests with one person but with the entire team contributing to the end result. Good final decisions are the byproduct of collective collaboration and the exchange of ideas. Create a culture of trust. Impeccable communication, purpose, and transparency encourage trust, which has a direct correlation to work performance. Cultivate an unselfish mindset. Unselfishness ultimately allows great leaders to scale their businesses and create a lasting legacy. Foster leadership in others. Leaders who understand the power of building a great team understand the need to develop the next generation of leaders. Youth Development has been at the forefront of my entire career. From my first job as an admin in career counseling at UVM until my most recent position as Senior Executive Director of Child Care Services at the Twin Tiers YMCA, I have dedicated myself to influencing human interaction in positive ways.
