I am Mary Coughlin, a pioneering force in Trauma-Informed Developmental Care, devoted to transforming neonatal healthcare into a compassionate, science-rooted practice that honors the humanity of babies, families and clinicians. With over 35 years as a Neonatal Nurse and Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, I have walked alongside the most vulnerable — our tiniest patients and their families — witnessing firsthand how trauma-informed, compassionate care can change lives. As the President and Founder of Caring Essentials Collaborative, I lead a movement that redefines the standards of neonatal care by integrating heart and science. My B.U.F.F.E.R. framework—founded on the principles of Belonging, Understanding, Forgiveness, Frameworks, Equanimity, and Respect — empowers healthcare professionals to reconnect with their own humanity while fostering deeper, more meaningful connections with the families they support. In 2020, I launched the Trauma-Informed Professional (TIP) Certificate Program, which has been endorsed by esteemed organizations such as the NIDCAP Federation International (NFI), the National Association of Neonatal Nurses (NANN), Council of International Neonatal Nurses (COINN), the NICU Parent Network (NPN), and the National Association of Perinatal Social Workers (NAPSW). Today, over 400 international, interdisciplinary healthcare professionals have enrolled or graduated from TIP, gaining the skills to integrate trauma-informed practices into their daily work and contribute to lasting, positive change in healthcare. In addition to my leadership and hands-on clinical experience, I am an author, speaker, and educator. My book, 'Trauma-Informed Care in the NICU: Evidence-Based Practice Guidelines for Neonatal Clinicians', and my contributions to other seminal texts have expanded the dialogue around trauma-informed care and inspired a new standard for neonatal and pediatric practice. My mission is to help healthcare systems recognize the pervasive impact of trauma on patients, families, and clinicians — and to compel meaningful change that actively reduces trauma for all. I envision a model of care where knowledge and compassion, science and soul, are seamlessly intertwined to create spaces of genuine healing and resilience. If you're passionate about evolving healthcare to honor the whole person—both patient and provider—or are curious about how trauma-informed principles can reshape neonatal care, I’d love to connect. Let’s create a future where care is a force for deep, lasting healing for all.
