Mary E. Davis is a cultural historian and critic specializing in fashion and its relationship to music, sport, dance, and visual art. In a wide-ranging career, she has held positions as a professor and dean, worked for The President’s Commission on Organized Crime and coordinated major events for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. She is currently a member of the Capstone Faculty at the Jackson School for Global Affairs at Yale University.Trained as a classical pianist, Mary wrote her doctoral dissertation at Harvard on the work of Parisian composer Erik Satie. She went on to write a biography of Satie, as well as the more expansive books "Classic Chic: Music, Fashion, and Modernism," and "Ballets Russes Style: Diaghilev's Dancers and Paris Fashion." Also a fan and scholar of popular music, her publications in the field include articles, essays, and the book "Waiting For A Train: Jimmie Rogers’s America." Mary has taught graduate, undergraduate, and executive courses on topics ranging from “Dance and Drama in Bali” to “The Politics of Art." For Yale’s Jackson School, she created and will teach a Capstone course on “Women Athletes: Fashion and Equity” in collaboration with the Sport Integrity Global Alliance, the leading international organization devoted to good governance, accountability, and transparency in worldwide sport.
