Presented ideas at a range of national and international conferences and in the media. Raised funds individually and as part of international consortiums totalling over $1 million. Planning and facilitating the Departmental curriculum review process. Managing ten tutors and co-lecturers for the Soweto campus and teaching an average of 600 students per year. Developed and taught courses including Sustainable Development, Governance and Development, Civic Action, African Development, and Qualitative Methods at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels. Established a non-profit organisation to conduct action research and advocacy around issues related to local government provision of water and sanitation services in South Africa. Programmatic responsibilities:• Conducting action research at the community level on critical topics • Implementing advocacy plans at international, national, and local levels• Presenting and publishing findings in multi-stakeholder fora, popular media and academic journals• Monitoring regional developments related to the human right to water and sanitation, supporting related campaigns, and contributing to social media Organisational responsibilities:• Overall strategic planning and fundraising• Managing programmes and staff, mentoring masters student interns• Overall financial managementSelected projects:• Conducted three year research project with York University/ IDRC on climate change and water adaptation in African Cities (alongside partners in Maputo and Nairobi). • Led a three year study with the Universities of Cape Town and KwaZulu-Natal to translate hydrological models for local communities’ use in formulating adaptation plans, supported by the Water Research Commission. Piloted in four communities and developed guidelines for replication by other practitioners. • Planned and facilitated high level, multi-stakeholder side events at COP17 and for Rio+20. • Implemented advocacy activities to promote the Water Dialogues’ recommendations. • With the Blue Planet Project (Council of Canadians), worked with campaigners in Mexico and India around emerging issues related to the human right to water and sanitation and to water resources, particularly in relation to dams and mines. Researched and wrote blogs and issue-focused publications.• Designed and conducted research on social acceptance of “sanitation innovations” in the global South (with University College London and Oxfam).• Initiated and moderated a national multi-stakeholder listserv for sector leaders.

As part of an international multi-stakeholder initiative, facilitated and managed the South African dialogue (project value $.75 million) to assess the possible role of the private sector in the delivery of water and sanitation in South Africa. Designed case study research and managed eight teams of researchers to conduct municipal, financial, and participatory community research in eight areas of South Africa. Coordinated a high level, multi-stakeholder process to grapple with research findings. Improved communication and understanding amongst a wide range of stakeholders. Developed and applied the concept of local dialogues in case study areas. Worked with partners in Brazil, Indonesia, the Philippines and Uganda in shaping international strategy and reviewing outputs. Summarised, analysed and published the South African Water Dialogues’ research findings.

As its first Director, supported the development of the organisation into a strong and well-respected membership-based NGO. Responsible for international fundraising and financial and programme management. Planned and managed a range of programmes:Rural Input into development policies and programmesPrepared information and briefed rural community representatives around key issues related to service delivery, public works programmes, health care, and the introduction of local government. Coordinated strategies to organize existing community based organizations throughout rural KwaZulu-Natal into representative sub-structures. Provided support for representatives to develop advocacy positions and participate in governmental policy and decision making fora.Research, information production and dissemination on development policies and programmesConducted research on stakeholder perspectives on new local government structures being formed. Developed and implemented a weekly isiZulu radio program and coordinated input from government departments and NGOs on rural policies and programmes. Produced a Rural Development Directory of service providers. Assisted in establishing the South African NGO Coalition and participated in other NGO networks. Capacity building of community leaders Implemented Sizobhukula Capacity Building Programme, which imparted basic organizational skills to over a thousand rural community based organisations by using a cascading model.
