When you hear "data visualization" you may think of coders, developers, or data scientists. In my role, I lean more toward data journalism--i.e., authoring, editing, and sketching visual stories. Good visual storytelling, no matter what its form or technical output, requires a thoughtfully written and designed narrative tailored to the desired audience and output channel. I draw on a mash-up of skills—design, writing, math, research, and intuitive UX/UI—to create data exhibits, interactives, and visual-story modules across a wide range of industry and functional topics. In my view, a good data visualization offers an accessible route into the message conveyed by numbers. An excellent one goes further. It hangs together like a well-crafted short story. No stray lines, no unnecessary verbiage. The story it tells is visual, numeric, and verbal, yet transcends any one of these categories. It sparks ideas and generates conversations. You don’t have to work to get the message but the message gets your mind working.Excellence like this is born out of strong collaboration among analysts, editors, designers, and developers. Over the years, I've learned to translate vocabularies, priorities, and process approaches across groups, while advocating for the integrity of the data story. I simplify and condense data content for clarity, legibility, and emphasis; select chart formats, rewrite labels/call-outs; assign colors that communicate the story.
