Mary Schulz is an agricultural economist and the Academic Program Manager at the Institute of Agricultural Technology at Michigan State University. Former Associate Director of the Michigan State University Extension Center for Local Government Finance and Policy within the Department of Agricultural, Food and Resource Economics where Mary conducted applied research and provided technical assistance for local and state government officials on public policy and public financial issues. Prior to co-launching the MSUE Center, Mary was the Program Director of the Michigan Local Government Benchmarking Consortium responsible for collecting and analyzing consortium members’ annual operational data and developing service area performance measures for its annual benchmarking report. Mary served as the Research Associate to the Elton R. Smith Endowed Chair in Food and Agricultural Policy and Coordinator of the Sustainable Michigan Endowed Project (SMEP). Prior to joining MSU, Mary was a Federal Affairs Representative for the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (NAMIC) and the Crop Insurance Research Bureau (CIRB) in Washington, DC. There she lobbied Congress, and federal departments and agencies on legislative and regulatory issues affecting the property/casualty and crop insurance industries. She also worked in the U.S. House of Representatives and served as staff to Congressman Nick Smith of Michigan as his Agricultural Committee Legislative Assistant charged with developing legislative initiatives on agricultural and environmental matters. Mary earned a Master of Science in Agricultural Economics and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics at Michigan State University.
