Mary S. previously worked as Researcher at Rhyze Mushrooms Co-Op Cic and Allotments Coordinator (Freelance Occasional Cover) at Bridgend Farmhouse Community Allotments. Mary S. holds Master Of Science - Ms, Soils And Sustainability, Distinction from The University Of Edinburgh.
I recently completed an MSc in Soils and Sustainability from the University of Edinburgh and SRUC, and I am now seeking opportunities in the fields of soils and agriculture. My masters provided me with a strong foundation in soil science, with a selective focus on soil biology and agroecology. My latest research applied DNA metabarcoding and culture-dependent methods to characterise soil fungal communities under different tillage and cover cropping practices—reflecting the intersection of my interests in soil microbiology and regenerative agriculture. This project provided me with extensive training in lab work focused on molecular biology and microbiology.I am dedicated to promoting sustainable and regenerative agricultural systems and advocating for food sovereignty. This commitment has motivated me to work and volunteer in community food-growing spaces and market gardens, where I’ve developed my horticultural skills and applied my expertise in soil management. Through these experiences, I’ve also gained valuable experience in managing volunteers and engaging people with locally-grown food. My passion for agroecology also aligns with my active involvement in the Landworkers Alliance. Agroecological research is something which interests me, and I am eager to pursue more opportunities in this field.I believe education is key to reversing ecological degradation and reconnecting people with food and soil. To support this, I've used my knowledge of soils and soil biology to conduct ad-hoc educational workshops, including sessions on microscopy—something I truly enjoy. If anyone is interested in hosting a workshop, feel free to reach out! In addition, I also have developed specialised skills in mycology, where I co-led the Edinburgh University Fungi Society, and have experience leading educational workshops and fungal forays.A significant period of my professional experience has been in social policy research and consultancy during my time at OCSI. Here I cultivated my expertise in data and statistical analysis, working on numerous impactful research projects, supporting various public and community sector organisations.Feel free to connect with me if you'd like to discuss opportunities, or any roles or projects where my skills and interests could be a good fit—or if you're interested in hosting a workshop. I'm always open to collaborate and share knowledge!
