Project Manager on the Noisy Guts Project. The multi-disciplinary team developed a wearable device (a belt) that records and analyses gut noises. The belt has both a diagnostic function and a monitoring function to help patients better manage their gut health.The team started with the diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a chronic gut condition that affects 11% of the world's population.The results of the team's initial data gathering and evaluation study demonstrated that the MVP belt provided an accurate, positive diagnosis of IBS, opening up the prospect of a new non-invasive approach to IBS diagnosis without the need for costly and uncomfortable colonoscopies. We wrote a successful NHMRC Development Grant application and I co-odinated publication of 6 peer-reviewed papers, and filing of patents protecting the technology.The Noisy Guts Project won the Emerging Innovation Category of the WA Innovator of the Year Awards 2018.The results of the first study gave the team confidence to move forward with product development. In 2019 a spin-out company was established to commercialise the technology.

Clinical Research Coordinator on the Urban Strep A Surveillance Study in Perth. The study aims to determine the incidence of pharyngitis infections, Strep A sore throat carriage prevalence, and the diversity of Strep A strains circulating in pre-school and school-aged children living in Perth and Melbourne.It is an important step towards future Strep A vaccine studies against pharyngitis and other serious diseases caused by Strep A such as rheumatic heart disease.

Project Area: The evolution of insect mating systems and immune function. Responsibilities: Design and execution of experiments and the statistical analysis of results. Development of a grant application.

Supervisor: Robert Knell.Project Title: Transmission dynamics of sexually transmitted disease.Project Aims (achieved): Investigating how transmission of a ladybird STD changes with mating rate, host density and prevalence.The project overturned the standard beliefs about key factors in the spread of STD's, and resulted in a high profile publication.

Supervisors: Greg Hurst and Valerie Isham Main research project: Sexually transmitted mites on coccinellid beetles: a case study of STD dynamics in natural populations of insects.Aims of Main Project (achieved): To document the epidemiology of a sexually transmitted parasite on ladybird beetles, and determine the importance of different factors in the spread of this STD. A secondary objective was to study the effect of the parasite upon the host.Outputs: Publications, plus supervision of successful student projects. A website to promote research group. International and UK collaborations established and built upon.
