Research Associate, Engineering FacultyUniversity Of Tasmania Nov 2015 - Dec 2015Sandy Bay, Tasmania"This work is a continuation of my Honours thesis at UTAS. At the end of my employment I was invited to present my findings to Hydro Tasmania"Rising applications of renewable energy sources in Australia causes intermittent loadings and outputs of the National Energy Market (NEM). Hydro turbines are increasingly being used to stabilise the energy grid, often at off-design conditions.Problem statement: Irregular loading and pressures poses a high risk of stress/fatigue in the runner structure and potentially shorten the life span of the hydro turbines being used to accommodate Australia's energy demand.Solution: Numerical modelling of the off-design loading of a Francis turbine runner allowed me to analyse the stress effect fluid flow has on the turbine blades and main body.Developing a CAD model for a turbine runner prototype to scale, and evaluating its performances at off-design operating conditions.Rare cases of cavitation are also observed.Method used:-Produce a 3D model of the fluid domain of the Francis turbine runner in Autodesk Inventor.-Set-up a steady state model in ANSYS using a frozen-rotor approach.-Set up a transient state model in ANSYS using a transient rotor-stator approach-Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was applied on the turbine's main body and used to pinpoint the locations that are subjected to stress and fatigue under off-design loadings.-optimum mesh type, pattern and size had to be determined beforehand to identify the ideal mesh to be applied onto the turbine's body-A Fluid-Structure-Interaction (FSI) model was also established on the solid model to evaluate pressure distribution and deformities experienced by the turbine runner.Note: SST Turbulence model was used, due to its versatility in either region of the boundary layer (comb of k-w and k-e models)Softwares used: Autodesk Inventor, Solidworks, Ansys 2.0 -
