Language Arts And Social Studies 4Th/5Th Teacher

In 2009-2010, I spent an amazing year as a founding teacher at the International School of Egypt (ISE) a brand new private school in Cairo, Egypt where I taught Language Arts and World History. As one of the most senior teachers there I created a warm, fun, and successful learning environment in my classroom of bilingual Egyptian students. By the time we were done the classroom looked like an Ancient Egyptian temple complete with paper pillars and an “altar” to Toth, the god of wisdom and writing! As a founding teacher at the school I contributed to: the development of the narrative report card system, the development of a responsive system for teaching teams to evaluate, support and monitor the needs of children who were struggling, and a scheduling solution for teaching Saturday classes that reduced the burden on the faculty and increased the motivation for the children. Together, with the other American and Egyptian teachers we created all-school unique and inspiring educational experiences: a week-long celebration of contemporary Egypt, a month-long celebration of poetry and expression through the arts, a month-long celebration of reading and authors, a week-long celebration of the Arabic language,a science fair, and an original all-school musical based on virtues and working together to create a better world. My World History students turned one long hallway into a “living” time-line and the bulletin boards outside my room were interactive learning centers for the school. During our study of Ancient Egypt students created a lift-the-flap poster for the whole school to test their knowledge. In addition to my teaching duties I was a sought after mentor for younger teachers for brainstorming solutions to academic and behavioral classroom issues. I enjoyed the exchange of information with them. They were able to teach me much about the use of technology in the classroom, especially with our Smartboards, and Internet resources such as Voice Thread and Brain Pops!

Language Arts Resource Teacher

Wildwood Elementary School

Before working as a reading specialist from my home I worked in the Amherst Public School system as a Language Arts Resource Teacher (LART) . This school system serves a culturally and socioeconomically diverse school population. In addition to many other LART tasks one main focus of mine was to find ways to make the distribution of quality learning opportunities more equitable. I identified the needs and I initiated the following two programs:Homework Club-A program pairing students in 4th-6th grade who were consistently failing to complete homework assignments with Umass, Amherst work-study students for one-on-one homework help two afternoons a week. This was paid for through a small grant and the college work-study program. 100% participation was achieved and teachers reported a significant increase in homework turned in.Parent Literacy Series- Meetings focused on strategies for improving language and literacy skills at home. This was for parents of 1st grade children identified through testing as performing below grade-level. Duplicate sessions were offered during the day and evening. Parents were provided with vouchers for cab fare, translators, and child care for younger siblings if needed. 100% participation was achieved. This was a very important place for parents to exchange ideas, ask questions and give us information about their children.
