Hack Oregon is a rapid prototyping lab taking a creative approach to data projects that bring insight to complex issues in the public interest. Project Ascend is a 6-week accelerated open-source code class sponsored by the Mozilla Corporation. Ascenders achieved the following:• Learning command line, terminal, Mac OS X environment, bash commands• Installing packages, setting up a development environment, hosting websites locally, configuring local web server & running php, running test suites, doing manual QA tasks on Firefox software products, running automated tests on Firefox software products, running several instances of Firefox (multiple release channels).• Learning how to find & read documentation for various projects, learning version control (mostly git, some mercurial), working with github to create pull requests for their changes.• Blogging weekly, communicating on social media as a way to participate in community, communicating with senior developers to get unstuck while working on their bugs, fixing bugs, learning to use bug trackers (Bugzilla, GH issues).• Giving presentations, teaching each other, documenting their efforts, improving existing documentation, and learning about open source community while participating in it.Most of the participants did resolve an issue in one of Mozilla’s many projects so each of them also have a bug/code change to point to and show for their time.
