Mary Ann served as 2017 Chair of the AIA Committee on the Environment. She led HOK's collaboration with the USGBC in the design of a children's center in Haiti after the devastating earthquake. As Resident Fellow for the AIA, Mary Ann led the effort to prioritize AIA's activities around sustainability and design for health as part of the Institute's repositioning initiative and its commitment to the Decade of Design. Her work led to the implementation of the AIA Sustainability Leadership Opportunity Scan which identified four primary focus area's for AIA's sustainability efforts: Energy, Materials, Design & Health and Resilience. Each of these topics now are being led by a robust team of AIA staff and volunteers with resources, tools, outreach and educational programs underway.
Firmwide Director Of Sustainable Design
As HOK’s firmwide sustainable design director, Mary Ann developed materials and programs to raise awareness and create a consistent base of knowledge across the firm and with HOK’s clients. As a result of her efforts, HOK now has over 900 LEED Accredited professionals and is committed to incorporating sustainable strategies on all projects.Mary Ann is co-author of The HOK Guidebook to Sustainable Design, Second Edition. She is a regular speaker on sustainable design topics. She is widely quoted in local, regional andnational media.

Mary Ann had a 35 year architectural career at HOK, a global design practice, which moved from intern architect, to project architect, project manager, ADA specialist, to director of firmwide practices, culminating in her role as Firmwide Sustainable Design Leader. Mary Ann was the first woman at HOK to be elevated as Fellow in the American Institute of Architects and served on the HOK Board of Directors.
