As a summa cum laude Honors Scholar in Chemistry and Chemistry education from Auburn University, I have a strong passion for teaching. With experience working at the high school level, as well as in activities outside of the traditional classroom, I have a diverse background with much to offer.I have student teaching experience at the high school level in both rural and urban school districts. During these experiences, I particularly enjoyed working with diverse student groups. I am passionate about connecting to my students on the academic, cultural, and personal level. I believe that when students feel respected and welcome in the classroom, they learn better, and they care more about that class. My careful preparation of lessons allowed me to break down complicated concepts into hands-on experiences to better engage students and to highlight problem-solving processes and skills that students can take with them beyond my science class. In my student-teaching placement, I was responsible for 3 classes totaling sixty 10th-12th grade students. Of these sixty students, I had ten students who had a 504 plan or IEP that I was responsible for following, documenting, and providing feedback to parents or case managers when asked.Outside of the high school classroom, I have 1.5 years of experience as a Supplemental Instruction leader for the Office of Academic Support at Auburn University. As an SI Leader, I meticulously planned and designed twice-weekly active learning review sessions for anywhere from 8 to 50 college students. The 3 pillars of SI are content mastery, skill integration, and peer connections. The skills I developed in facilitating these review sessions have been instrumental to my performance and confidence as a teacher thus far. Working for SI also built my skills in constructive reflection of lessons, and in giving actionable feedback. Over my time with SI, I was promoted to Peer Mentor and to Lead Peer Mentor, where I gained added responsibilities of observing my peers and helping them to reflect and highlight opportunities for growth, as well as becoming responsible for program development and leading training for other leaders over each semester.
