About Mary Elizabeth Windham, J.D., Shrm-Cp

WHO I AM: I am an employee relations advocate, employment attorney, global compliance strategist, ethicist, and educator with over a decade of experience at leading national law firms, Fortune 500 CROs, and global professional services providers. As the boundaries of HR shift in real time, I help HR teams migrate from the services that have defined HR historically to meeting new challenges and growing company culture. Today, as a client-facing forensics contractor for a global professional services organization, I bring a unique 360-degree perspective to the legal and compliance issues permeating the world of work. Leveraging my extensive large firm legal experience in both the multinational and start-up environment, I work with organizational leadership to develop and implement initiatives that enhance organizational health and grow the bottom line. I bring special subject matter expertise in all aspects of employment law, ethics, and the prevention of fraud and abuse. I am committed to promoting workplace equity and am certified by Cornell's School of Industrial and Labor Relations to provide targeted D&I initiatives proven to make a meaningful impact on both workplace culture and employee performance. WHAT MAKES ME DIFFERENT: I am uniquely positioned as a legal-HR hybrid to help companies compete vigorously and ethically in a dynamic global marketplace. As a strategic business partner I help organizations navigate the complex maze of federal and state labor and employment laws, policies, and regulations that govern their operations with a keen awareness of how compliance strategy can help or hinder employee engagement and company culture. I am a creative problem-solver and communicator that loves her work. I offer creative workplace solutions, not simplified restatements of technical rules and regulations. In my cross-functional role I serve one end: partnering with leadership as an agile tenacious architect of organizational growth. I value my partnerships with my peers and have served in leadership roles of the Raleigh Metro Society for Human Resource Management (Asst. VP Community Relations, 2024) and the Triangle Society for Human Resource Management (Vice President, Membership, 2022 and Membership Chair, 2021).

I have extensive expertise conducting effective witness interviews, establishing relevant facts, and exercising judgment in applying organizational policies and procedures to the factual evidence. I maintain confidentiality as appropriate and am attentive to the common investigative pitfalls to avoid -- such as the failure to document. Well-written written reports at the conclusion of investigations demonstrate the thoroughness of the investigation, the reasons for opening the investigation, as well as the steps an entity has taken to achieve those goals. As a business writer, I produce information in a succinct, clear, convincing and organized manner, and in an appropriate format for its intended use.
