  • Chapel Hill High School
    English Teacher
Chapel Hill High School Aug 2017 - Jun 2018
    Tyler, Tx
When I was studying to be a teacher, I never thought it would be like this. I went from learning English and all that entails to teaching it to 150+ students everyday for one school year. All I can say is that teaching is a skill that requires some inspiration, passion, and perseverance to see it through. The administrative side was the easy part; learning new software, organizing, and time management are skills I have used in many positions that came in handy here. It was managing those 150+ students everyday and learning to understand and communicate with the other staff that took a good portion of my time and effort to get through. By the end of the first semester, I had learned how to effectively manage 25 to 30 people at a time with limitless attitude and infinitely curious minds, all while having people from all over the campus coming in to distract and observe. While I think that I did an excellent job with learning how to run the show, I also realized that it was my first time and I made plenty of mistakes along the way to figuring things out.
  • University Of Texas At Tyler Writing Center
    Tutor
University Of Texas At Tyler Writing Center Aug 2015 - Aug 2017
In this position, I was most likely to find myself helping someone understand the process or writing requirements dictated by their instructor. However, I was sometimes called upon to actually help a student become better in their own writing process and style. Both of these require an intricate and inarguable understanding into the delicate human mind that perceives a piece of writing as an extension of themselves. Most of the time, I am able to recognize the type of individual I am working with through a few vague questions that require the writer to explain their ideas and experiences. From there, I narrow down the questions into more concrete yet visceral points that bring about enlightenment for us both as we go through the revise and editing process together.A writing tutor acts an advisor, mentor, teacher, and friend during the learning process, and can be a vital part of the success for the student. These same skills carry over into a variety of writing, editing, and research fields. Being able to work with a team is crucial in a writing center, and recognizing your own limitations allows growth in both knowledge and understanding.
