The Mary Orton Company provides mediation for public policy disputes and facilitation for public policy discussions, with an emphasis on collaborative environmental problem solving. We also provide public involvement and organization development services. Clients include (partial list)* National Park Service and the Hualapai Tribe for mediating a boundary dispute; * Grand Canyon National Park for developing and executing a public participation plan for a controversial environmental impact statement; * U. S. Bureau of Reclamation for facilitating the work of a 24-member federal advisory committee, the Glen Canyon Dam Adaptive Management Work Group; * Coconino National Forest for an employee satisfaction process; * Salt River Project; * Arizona State University; * the Arizona Coalition to End Homelessness; and * Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

Responsibilities as Regional Director of this national river conservation organization involved developing ecologically and economically sustainable solutions to protect wild rivers and repair big rivers. Also responsible for resource development; hiring and managing staff; and media, community, and governmental relations. Accomplishments included negotiating an agreement to remove a 92-year-old dam from Fossil Creek in Central Arizona.

This non-profit agency was formed to develop permanent, affordable housing for very-low-income working people. Responsibilities as president and chief executive officer include forming the first Board of Directors and developing the agency’s first housing community, Steele Commons. Steele Commons, opened in June 1997, provides permanent housing for 60 formerly homeless men and women, with supportive services to assist them to maintain their housing.

Answering to the Board of Directors, responsible for leading this private, non-profit organization whose mission is to help homeless persons permanently end their homelessness. The agency grew from an annual budget of $700,000 to $3.1 million in ten years, and served more than 6,000 homeless people annually with shelter and services. Duties included hiring and supervising 85 staff, resource development, public and community relations, governmental relations, strategic planning, program development and implementation, and organizational development.
