Learning matters. Every student should have the best learning experience, whatever their background. Teacher training works. It provides the knowledge, practical skills and reflective ability for teachers to continue to develop. Communication counts. Everyone living in the UK needs the opportunity to learn English, to fulfil their potential in their lives and in society. Languages are for everyone: we can all benefit from speaking and understanding other languages and broadening our view of the world.I work with teachers throughout their career to inspire them to develop their understanding of how we learn. I encourage tutors to analyse their learners’ needs, their sessions and their materials and reflect on how these can be even better. I model innovative and effective teaching methods in my sessions with teachers, so that they can use these techniques to promote their own students’ learning. I am an experienced observer of teaching and learning, and use this to broaden the teaching repertoire of those I work with.I am passionate about the importance of ESOL teaching (English for Speakers of Other Languages) for those who have settled in the UK and want to build a place for themselves in society. I work with ESOL teachers to help them understand more about our language and how best to teach it, and am in demand as a consultant and workshop leader through NATECLA training. My workshops focus on teachers’ knowledge about language systems such as grammar, spelling and pronunciation, and I model evidence-based language learning techniques that teachers can use in their own classes. As a trustee and former co-chair of NATECLA, the national association for UK ESOL teachers, I also work with the organisation in campaigning for improved funding and adequate provision of ESOL classes, and for a national ESOL strategy for England.
