About Mary Butler

You can find more about my profile as an educator and researcher on my webpage: http://www.marybutler.org/In my work as an OT educator, I am involved in increasing the capacity of the occupational therapy profession to screen and address issues of visual impairment. As an advocate for people with disability, I have been a member of the National Reference Group that led to the Enabling Good Lives model; I have served on the ACC Consumer Outlook Group; and more recently I was a member of the national reference group for visual rehabilitation services in New Zealand. I have served many terms as a committee member of the Brain Injury Association and I am also on the board of the Visual Impairment Charitable Trust Aotearoa (VICTA). As a researcher I have successfully competed for grants both internally and externally. For example, an action research project about lighting, funded by the Participatory Science Platform; my students have attracted grants from a number of support groups including Retina and The Lighthouse; I am a named researcher on the HRC funded Older People Driving study, examining the medical assessment of fitness to drive process. My doctoral and ACC funded postdoctoral research was in the area of long term effects of disability.I coordinate the Master's Program at the School of Occupational Therapy, and I teach the research paper. My particular strength is in helping clinicians to translate their ideas into feasible (and sometimes fundable) research.
