As a registered nurse for over 7 years on an acute care medical unit in a busy Boston hospital, I’ve experienced firsthand the desperate need for chronic disease prevention and wellness promotion because I’ve cared for the sickest in our community, who’d long lacked access to care that could’ve prevented the acuity of their condition. Through caring for such patients, I know my passion lies in promoting the foundational layer of overall wellness and disease prevention through health education and by addressing health disparities among diverse populations. I’ve realized that health is so much more than a singular physical state or a box to be checked on a chart; health involves one’s thoughts, values, environment, relationships, and so on. Health is affected by social drivers like food insecurity, income inequality, mental distress, systemic racism – and those factors are often pervasive, existing where patients live, work, learn, play, and/or worship.
