Ambassadors are the eyes on the street, creating a consistent positive presence in the neighbourhood. The overarching goal was to improve the perception of safety in the South Core neighbourhood by reporting incidents of emerging safety issues, promising community safety and raising awareness about the community's role in crime prevention. This position tied into the City’s respect. initiative, which promotes the attitudes, beliefs and behaviours that recognize the importance of human dignity and seeks to raise awareness of how community members should treat one another. The Pilot Project was also an excellent educational opportunity myself, as I spent time working with Police Officers, City staff, service providers, local youth groups and the business community. I designed and administered community safety surveys, supported neighbourhood animation events, prepared meals at a neighbourhood homeless shelter, and learned about harm reduction approaches.
