I am interested in deciphering the many intriguing functions of biological systems on the cellular and molecular level and discovering ways we can engineer them or harness their natural abilities to help treat disease. In the Kostyukova lab in WSU's Voiland School of Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering, I study the novel functions of actin-binding proteins tropomodulin and leiomodin involved in cardiac muscle contractility and neuron cytoskeletal structure remodeling, as well as mutations in these proteins that can lead to abnormal function, causing disease.I am also part of WSU's NIH Protein Biotechnology Training Program, where I am part of a diverse group of graduate students who have unique access to funding from the NIH, dedicated mentors, and opportunities for professional development toward obtaining a job in the biotechnology industry. By participating in this program, I aim to develop translational skills for academia and industry, foster community engagement through my position as the Outreach Committee Chair, and develop my leadership skills.
