Director Oregon Renewable Energy Center; Professor Of Electrical And Renewable Engineering (Tenured)
Today’s technological world is generally entrepreneurial and multidisciplinary. Many technologies fail in the transition from an idea to deployment. By embracing an inter/transdisciplinary collaborative approach, this transition is energized. OREC's mission is to enhance economic development and promote the use of renewable energy. My role is primarily to be the public face of OREC, set strategic direction of the organization, develop research opportunities for the center and lab, grant and proposal writing, seek and obtain funding to support the associated faculty and students in their applied research, and provide funding to faculty for academic publications. While I do engage as PI in a few research project, my primary function is to support and advance others in their research and learning careers for both faculty and students. In a PI capacity, I have initiated two applied research projects: Floating Solar Aeration and Off-Grid Solar + Storage Irrigation, and a third, Solar Pivot Irrigation, which is in the early design phase. I have recently received a USDA grant to perform energy audits for rural Oregon farms and small businesses. As a Full Professor I have taught udergraduate and graduate courses across the renewable energy world and electrical engineering field. Courses include: Photovoltaic systems, fuel cells, biofuels, wind energy, energy storage, solid state physics, electronics, circuits, power electronics, analytics, intro to engineering, etc.
Photovoltaic Reliability And Consumer Electronics Manager
DuPont is a global material science company and a leading supplier of high performance materials including photovoltaics (materials and processes), display applications, automotive, agriculture, and biosciences.I have three roles within my scope of responsibilities:One is leading a global team of researchers encompassing North America and Asia-Pacific regions in all aspects of solar cell/module reliability and new product development. A large aspect of this role is to develop and provide a data driven marketing message to differentiate products from the competition by demonstrating superior product reliability/performance and provide technical sales support. The second and newest is the build-up of a consumer electronics R&D/prototyping application lab in Silicon Valley for additive manufacturing. DuPont has an enormous assortment of materials to select from for the electronics world. From this assortment of material, we choose the most likely candidate(s) that fits the application, then build the prototype to the customer/partner engineering specifications. The third covered technical evaluation materials and technologies for potential corporate investment.
Technical Manager
The list of my roles and accomplishments:• Directs pilot line and facilities operations including supply chain responsibilities.• Manages all experimental and production starts and processing to maximize line utilization/throughput while minimizing cycle time to meet milestones for multiple R&D projects.• Increased maximum pilot line throughput of wafers per week by 44% while reducing lab operating expenditures by 12%.• Utilized Six Sigma hybrid DIMAC/DMADV methodology to reduce solar cell metallization costs by 68%. Proved “where the customer is heading” to facilitate accurate silver sales revenue forecasting.• Supervises Facilities Manager and Equipment Technicians in daily activities.• Oversees and approves cost estimates, budget and activities of facilities/equipment upgrade and repair. • Provides ongoing operational process analysis, mitigates “scope creep,” communicates project status and identifies and resolves operational issues and constraints.• Successfully implemented DuPont safety programs through developing site safety processes/procedures for pilot line and facilities operation.• Key committee member in the evaluation of all processing tools for hazard analysis, recommending solutions, prioritizing action items, and modifying procedures to minimize hazard exposure.
Technology Lab Manager
Innovalight has developed a portfolio of patented technologies allowing the economical production of solar cells with higher conversion efficiencies. DuPont purchased Innovalight in 2011.• Directed R&D lab operations in the development of multiple advanced solar cell architectures.• Installed a 10MW industrial-scale solar pilot manufacturing and characterization line.• Hired and trained technician team to staff pilot line.• Spearheaded pilot line conversion of all tools/processes to 156mm wafers; completed conversion within 3 week window with superior solar cell performance and under budget. • Responsible for maintaining the “line health” at maximum device performance through SPC methods. • Directed the engineering team to identify and solve any line deviation.• Planned and lead multiple cell production campaigns of R&D cells for module fabrication.• Supervised the processing of customer (~40 manufacturers) wafers to demonstrate the selective emitter advantage.• Trained multiple customers in the fabrication of the CougarTM solar cell architecture. • Determined and developed optimal Silicon Nitride and stacked anti-reflection coatings to optimize cell performance and minimize cell to module losses.• Simulating and subsequent recommendation of module encapsulation materials to customers.
Senior Device Engineer
• Recruited while completing final 6 months of PhD by the CTO to function as technical lead for R&D efforts developing silicon nano-particles for multiple solar cell device structures.• Instrumental in the development of patented processing steps for thin-film and crystalline silicon solar cell fabrication with silicon nano-particles.• Multiple invention disclosures, both individual and with co-inventors, written and converted to patent applications.• Responsible for identifying, specifying, acceptance and process development of multiple custom semiconductor tools. • Key player in recruiting, interviewing and building the Device Engineering team for both engineers and technicians from 5 to 22 team members.Technical:SAS JMP; Python; Solidity; HelioScope; System Advisory Model; PVSys; Homer Energy; DESSIS; Athena; COMSOL; Sql; Eyelit MES; Data and Predictive Analytics; Design of Experiments; Statistical Process Control; MS Office Suite Remote, semi-remote microwave and direct RF plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition systems for silicon, silicon-nitride, silicon-geranium deposition, silicon nanoparticle production and hydrogen passivation; Rapid Thermal Processing/Annealing; In-situ doped silicon evaporation and ion assisted deposition; Dopant diffusion, in-line and tube systems; Screen print technologies; Reactive ion etchers; Thermal evaporators; E-beam evaporators; Sputtering systems; Photolithography systems; Wet and dry chemical processing, in-line and batch processes; Laser system operation/programming; Current-Voltage; Capacitive-Voltage; Spectral Response; Suns-Voc/Suns-Jsc, Photo conductance decay (lifetime); Electro luminescence; Photo luminescence; LBIC; UV transmission/reflection system; Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy; Scanning electron microscopy and focus ion beam; Atomic Force Microscopy; Curve tracer.
