1995 - Dec 2011

Manager Of Information Systems

Responsible for development of a 4th Dimension-based custom database management application for the flexographic label industry. Application had ability to store data on customers, customer orders, and specialized tooling (dies) used to cut paper in the label manufacturing process. Dies module worked with fractions where most off-the-shelf systems used decimal, and stored pictures for odd-shaped dies; could print die book including these images.Recommended accounting package that had open source code; made modifications to the accounting package for the specialized needs of label manufacturing.I continue to work for Label Art as a consultant today. I helped with integration of the latest digital printing systems into their environment. I am sometimes brought in for complex database-driven print jobs, allowing every label to be entirely unique (different text, images, etc). I have experience with database-driven barcodes, including complex formats with checksums, and even 2D barcodes.

Julian Systems was a Macintosh VAR that built RAM upgrades for Macintosh computers, a video editing system, and a variety of other hardware devices for Macintosh computers. Julian had one of the first Lino imagesetters in the San Francisco Bay Area, and had created a custom application allowing customers to send files electronically for imagesetting. The application would gather information on a job including positive or negative, film or paper, mirror image (emulsion up or down), would compress the customer's file, then transmit via modem long before the Internet was open for public consumption.I worked under Aaron Disario as a 4th Dimension programmer, a 4GL programming environment with an integrated database & Pascal-like programming language. We were building a custom POS (Point Of Sale) system that had several paid installations.

Managing Macintosh computers on a network in a graphics-intensive business environment. Computers were used for a variety of office productivity tasks including word processing, spreadsheets, accounting, etc.Worked with a programmer to design a custom printing management system based on the Omnis database development environment. I did development on this system as well. Had modules for Customers, Dies, Quotes, Orders, & POs. Handled support for this system by phone & onsite. Evaluated Helix development environment as an alternative; "cracked" Helix databases ultimately excluded Helix from further consideration.Wrote a timecard program in 4th Dimension database development environment to keep track of employee hours electronically. Timecard application had ability to read & write mag-stripe cards; employees would swipe their card to clock in or out. Reports used to calculate payroll.Macs were used for graphic design tasks with programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Freehand, Quark XPress, Suitcase. Helped develop methods of utilizing digital technology to create typesetting & artwork to replace older camera & film based methods. Helped develop method of directly modifying Postscript data to achieve specialized graphics requirements such as distortion when no applications were available. Responsible for selection/recommendation of high end scanners ($50K), imagesetter ($150K), RIP (Raster Image Processors).
