Massimo Rota previously worked as Construction engineer at Studio Tecnico Crp and Junior civil structural engineer at Ced Ingegneria S.R.L.. Massimo Rota holds Master Of Engineering - Meng, Construction Engineering - Ingegneria Dei Sistemi Edilizi, 105/110 from Politecnico Di Milano.
Born under the shadow of the mountains and Bergamo’s upper town, the passion for building comes early in my life, thanks to my grandfather who was a bricklayer that let me play with the toy soldiers in his material warehouse. My way was clear in my mind, it remained to understand how to face the world of construction, whether through the most creative side of architecture or with the most one rigorous of engineering. The continuous desire to grow and to face seemingly impossible challenges leads me to change city, enroll in university and attend the Politecnico di Milano. The mathematical part of my mind won and so I decide to enroll in the faculty of engineering, and in particular building engineering, for combining the scientific side and the creative side. The experience in a large and prestigious university is fantastic, the opportunity to meet students from all over Italy, combined with the difficulty of the academic path, instead of being discouraged, enhance the determination and the willingness to succeed. The master degree career is lived as a working student, thanks to an internship that becomes a collaboration. In 2016 I’ve been selected for the European mobility program and I attend six months abroad, at BME - Budapest University of Technology and Economics; undoubtedly the most beautiful experience of my life, with the satisfaction to pay everything by myself thanks to the work done. Living and studying abroad enriches me so much, both on a human and academic side, and gives rise to wish to compare with international realities.I spend 10 months of research in the Indexlab laboratory of the Politecnico di Milano, where new applications in the field of architecture are explored, such as the use of robots and new technologies. Together with my supervisor and mentor Pierpaolo Ruttico and with the sponsorship of international companies we develop the FORMWORKS project which is part of the projects that represent the Politecnico di Milano at the fair Technology hub 2017 and is published in the magazine of the national association of composite materials (Assocomposoti) in 2019.After graduation, I have experience in a small company that allows me to face and learn about each phase of the project and to understand what position I want to cover. The great ambition and passion for architecture leads to the desire to keep improving and learning from the best at the international level. After the experience gained I am ready to face a new challenge and keep building my dream.

This research analyzes the design, production and performance aspects of carbon fiber formwork for the casting of reinforced concrete columns, which, once placed on site and filled with concrete, remain in operation by geometrically modeling the element and creating a wheeling that enhances its carrying capacity. The idea of creating carbon fiber formworks arises from the desire to exploit the potential of this material in the building industry, but not simply from a performance point of view, but also combining aesthetic expressiveness, thus creating a sort of element that encapsulates both the rationality of engineering and the expressiveness of architecture. The fundamental aspect of the whole process is the integration with digital manufacturing methods. Digital manufacturing is the process through which is possible to create solid and three-dimensional objects starting from digital designs obtained with algorithmic design, thus obtaining an infinite number of unique pieces but without price increases. In this case, digital manufacturing becomes a digital robotic manufacture because the designed 3D object is obtained through the robot cutting of polystyrene with hot wire. The manufacturing technique is the filament winding, where the polystyrene form obtained from the cut is wrapped in fiber ribbon and subsequently cured to obtain the solid carbon geometry. At the end of the process, the polystyrene is dissolved with the solvent to obtain the final carbon part. This production method can give geometries not obtainable in any other way.The research has followed all phases of the project: from the study of materials, to the design of the elements, to the production method, to the experimental tests, and finally the comparison with the current legislation.
