About Massoud Amin
My mission is to improve the human condition by assuring that the lifeline systems, which we rely upon are more reliable, resilient and secure. My professional contributions have been in three primary areas:- Defense networks & logistics systems;- Modernization, efficiency, security & resilience of local to national interdependent critical infrastructures; and- Tech/business/policy foresight & strategy.For over 4 decades, my research efforts have spanned a broad spectrum of activities from helicopters to power grids – but there are certain fundamental problems and underpinning dynamics that exist in any of these systems. It is these problems I have attempted to address in my professional work.Though my work has also moved from smaller systems to larger ones, I have never abandoned my childhood belief that electricity is the linchpin -- the most fundamental infrastructure -- of modern society.My most recent work has been at the University of Minnesota. From 2003 to 2018, I directed the U of M’s Technological Leadership Institute (TLI). When I assumed the post of Director, I undertook a four-step plan to redefine TLI, which set the stage for future growth. TLI has emerged as a world-class organization that has developed a significant talent pipeline, impacting the region’s innovation and economic growth.Before joining the U of M, I served as manager of mathematics and information sciences at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) in Palo Alto, where I led strategic research in modeling, simulation, optimization, and adaptive control of national infrastructures for energy, telecom, transportation, and finance. I led the development of smart grids and enhanced critical infrastructures’ security. For my efforts, I twice received the Chauncey Award, EPRI’s highest honor.After 9/11, while at EPRI, I had the privilege of directing all security-related R&D for U.S. utilities. My work at EPRI involved working with a diverse range of stakeholders, ranging from over 94% of the North American utilities, utilities from 42 other nations, the U.S. DoE, U.S. DoD, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), U.S. OHS/DHS, dozens of universities, and NGOs.I served as Chair of the IEEE Smart Grid, the Texas Reliability Entity, the Midwest Reliability Organization, the Board on Infrastructure & Constructed Environment at the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and on the Board on Mathematical Sciences & Applications at the National Academy of Sciences.If you share the same goals and would like to collaborate, please reach out.

Dr. Massoud Amin, IEEE and ASME Fellow, is a professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering, and University Distinguished Teaching Professor Awardee, at the University of Minnesota - https://massoud-amin.umn.edu/.Dr. Amin is an expert in energy, smart grids, dynamical systems, control engineering, cyber-physical security, critical infrastructure protection, emerg’g/pivotal technologies, S&T policy/development, IP valuation/strategy, and teaches classes in these areas as well as in the ECE dept.His research focuses on two areas: 1) Global transition dynamics to enhance resilience, security & efficiency of complex dynamical systems, incl. critical infrastructures for interdependent energy, computer networks, communications, transportation, environmental & economic systems;2) Technology scanning, mapping, assessment, valuation, strategy, development and deployment. He is the author of over 200 peer-reviewed publications, editor of 7 collections of manuscripts, & served on the editorial boards of 8 academic journals.He is Chairman Emeritus of the IEEE Smart Grid (January 2014 - August 2018), and founding Chairman of IEEE Smart Grid newsletter/publications (August 2010 - July 2014). From June 2010 to August 2017, he served as a member of the Texas Reliability Entity (as board chairman), a utility industry regional entity that oversees reliability and security of the ERCOT interconnection. Director & Honeywell H.W. Sweatt Chair, Technological Leadership Institute (3/2003 - 10/2018)
At TLI, he led 7 endowed chairs and 64 associated senior faculty from across ten colleges at the University of Minnesota, executives from industry, and governmental leaders, to develop local and global leaders for technology enterprises. His responsibilities at TLI included direction and oversight of all academic, think-tank, financial and administrative elements of TLI’s educational, research, and consulting programs. In addition, Dr. Amin led the Master of Science in Management of Technology (MOT) program as its Director of Graduate Studies (DGS, during 2003-2011 and 2014-2016). He founded the Master of Science in Security Technologies (MSST) program in 2009 and served as its Director of Graduate Studies during 2009-2013. He founded the Master of Science in Medical Device Innovation (MS-MDI) program in 2013.Prior to joining the UofM in March 2003, Dr. Amin held positions of increased responsibility including the Area Manager of Infrastructure Security, Grid Operations/Planning, Energy Market, and Risk & Policy Assessment, at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) in Palo Alto, Calif. He pioneered R&D in smart grids in 1998, and led the development of 24 technologies that transferred to industry. After 9/11, he directed all security-related R&D for U.S. utilities. He has led research, development, and deployment of smart grids, and the enhancement of critical infrastructures’ security during this period. Prior to joining the University of Minnesota in March 2003, Dr. Amin held positions of increased responsibility at EPRI. In the aftermath of tragic events of 9/11 he directed all security-related research and development at EPRI, including the Infrastructure Security Initiative (ISI) and the Enterprise Information Security (EIS). Prior to October 2001, he served as manager of mathematics and information science at EPRI, where he led strategic R&D in modeling, simulation, optimization, and control of national infrastructures for energy, telecommunication, transportation, and finance. Dr. Amin pioneered R&D into smart grids and self-healing infrastructures and led the development of more than 24 advanced technologies transferred to the industry.

During 1985-1989, he received his doctoral degree and served as a lecturer and research associate. During 1989-1997, he held positions of assistant professor, Sr. Fellow, and then associate professor of systems science and mathematics and associate director of the Center for Optimization & Semantic Control. During his twelve years at Washington University, he was one of the main contributors to several projects with United States Air Force, NASA-Ames, Rockwell International, McDonnell Douglas, Boeing, MEMC, ESCO, Systems & Electronics Inc. and United Van Lines.
