Analyzed production numbers and performed physical audits / measures as prescribed by management at several stages of completion over several months. Dissatisfied with results and traditional house methods, and thinking well outside the box, and ran two separate audits from different perspectives simultaneously for several weeks. The refined audit approach pinpointed key areas of weakness, and the exercise ultimately saved the company almost six figures annually.

Cost controls and cash flow were the primary themes at the time.

Set up the complete accounting system, procedures, cash management, checks, cards, banking, payroll, benefits, receivables, payables, reporting, and reconciling, and hired a local CPA to keep everything pointed in the right direction. Responsible for everything except inventory and purchasing. Provided additional back office strength by producing proforma reports and cash flow projections (along with regular income statements) to Comerica Bank in two successful bids to finance and acquire additional strategically-located parts stores which doubled revenue.

Was in the first groups of Michigan mechanics required to be state licensed when put into law in the 1970's. Made appointments, listened to customers' requests, and repaired vehicles accordingly. We rarely had a come-back as we were concerned with customer satisfaction. My father ran one part of the operation and I ran another. Good times....

Tended vegetable stand part time for Arlene Gauss, farmer and neighbor, for fifty cents an hour. Assisted in changing the Ford tractor wheels (rotating wheel widths to accommodate work in the fields), picked vegetables, dug potatoes, fertilized fields with the manure spreader behind the tractor, assisted in the barns and sheds, and dissuaded woodchucks and crows from doing damage. Great employer, kind, patient, forgiving. I saved enough money in 1972 to purchase my Schwinn 10 speed that I still have and use.
