Promoted to a senior member of the executive team within 14 months. Enhanced duties, in addition to the on-going advocacy responsibilities below, include overseeing the organization’s board governance program, office of the general counsel, and risk management, compliance, and data governance team. Supervise the planning and execution of meetings of the IIA Global Board of Directors and North American Board of Directors. Collaborate closely with the CEO and others members of the Executive Leadership Team on the development of organizational strategy, HR policies, legal/compliance matters, and profession/organizational innovation (e.g. artificial intelligence). Develop, in consultation with the CEO and boards of directors, the organization’s official public policy positions. Oversee cross-functional collaboration (e.g. with the Standards & Guidance, Membership, & Affiliate Relations Teams) on various initiatives (public comment opportunities, educating policymakers about The IIA’s standards and certifications, securing elected and appointed government officials at conferences). Currently spearheading the drafting of and stakeholder consultation on a first-of-its-kind legal and regulatory framework for the profession; managing the development of model global legislation for our 116 affiliates and model state legislation for our newly launched U.S. state policy program; and directing original public policy research examining internal audit laws in Canada.

Responsible for the strategic oversight and management of The IIA’s advocacy programs (U.S., Canada, global, and corporate governance engagement). Completely rebuilt the concept and the scope of advocacy at The IIA, growing the team from one person to seven and the programs from two to four in less than a year. Key driver of new initiatives at the organization including the launch of a U.S. political action committee (IIA PAC), a Congressional Key Person Program for U.S. chapters, and a Canadian Government Key Person Program for Canadian chapters. Primary IIA Global legal/policy/political resource for our 116 affiliates around the world.

Charged with staffing and scaling the global advocacy strategy for (ISC)2, the world’s largest nonprofit membership association of certified cybersecurity professionals, with a special focus on the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union and Australia; formulated a global public policy thought leadership program; supervisory responsibilities for a global team of advocacy directors; developed key stakeholder engagement strategies and implemented monitoring systems for hearings, legislation, public comment opportunities, and press and social media coverage; led project to undertake original research to understand the cybersecurity public policy landscape in the organization’s top 10 largest global membership markets; tasked with aligning and building a strategy to integrate the organization’s public policy program activities with its communications/media activities.

Led efforts to develop a new, enhanced global advocacy strategy for (ISC)2; engaged internal stakeholders as well as a newly created Global Advocacy Task Force to seek input and fine-tune public policy and thought leadership priorities; developed specific advocacy strategies in four target markets (the US, the UK, the EU and Australia); led a project management team to identify profession risks and opportunities around the recent formation of the UK Cyber Security Council; developed an advocacy staffing model, budget recommendations, and a framework to track strategy metrics.

Oversaw the AICPA's state advocacy program, providing support to all 55 independent state and jurisdictional CPA societies for their direct advocacy efforts; served as a chief strategist to the organization on state-level policy priorities; directed the AICPA's principal outreach to all state and jurisdictional boards of accountancy, collaborating with them on their efforts to regulate the profession and protect the public interest; served as a key liaison with the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy; drove efforts, in partnership with NASBA, to update and adopt the profession's model state act, the Uniform Accountancy Act; coordinated with all key AICPA technical teams on state legislation and regulations affecting their portfolios; supervised the state advocacy team's communications efforts with key stakeholders through social media, legislative/regulatory updates, public presentations/speeches, development of an annual legislative issues conference track, webinars, newsletters, and briefing calls; coordinated a number of major policy initiatives where there is a nexus between state policy and international/ federal policy (e.g., U.S./Canadian cross border practice).

Represented the Institute’s and the accounting profession’s interests and viewpoints before elected officials, regulators, and the Administration. Analyzed legislation, hearings, and regulations. Worked closely in coalition with individual firm public policy advocates. Helped to coordinate and support grassroots initiatives and outreach to state CPA societies. Researched and wrote policy memoranda, talking points, speeches, and materials for personal presentations as well as for senior management.

Worked directly with HRC’s Communications, Political, and Executive departments. Prepared speeches, editorials, talking points, letters, and other public messages on behalf of the organization. Participated in senior communications strategy discussions.

Oversaw the Senator's portfolio of economic policy issues, including serving as her principal adviser during her tenure on the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee. Successfully supported the passage of several of the Senator's initiatives including her efforts to enhance whistle blowing provisions in the Sarbanes Oxley Act, create better housing opportunities for grandparents raising grandchildren, and establish a first-of-its-kind coordinated federal financial literacy/education strategy. Prepared briefing materials, speeches, materials for the Senate record, as well as correspondence with government officials as well as constituents. Reviewed materials prepared by legislative correspondents. Represented the Senator, both by her side and alone, before constituents, interest groups, and other Senate and congressional offices.
