Matea Gold, an award-winning journalist, is a managing editor of The Washington Post, where she helps shape strategy for the newsroom and oversees key departments, including the national, local, investigative, general assignment and data staffs. Before that, she served as The Post’s national editor, leading more than 150 journalists in breaking agenda-setting news and delivering investigative and feature coverage on a wide range of topics, including politics, the federal government, national security, the judiciary, immigration, race, health and science. In that role, she launched a new democracy team and a visual enterprise team, deepened on-the-ground reporting in California and Texas and shaped revelatory coverage of the fall of Roe v. Wade, the fallout of the pandemic, the 2022 midterm elections and the 2024 White House race, among other consequential storylines. Matea previously ran The Post's national political enterprise and investigations team, shepherding sensitive and high-profile stories such as the special counsel investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 campaign and then-President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. She has driven innovative storytelling experiments – leading the production of The Mueller Report Illustrated, a graphic nonfiction series about the special counsel report – and has spearheaded some of The Post’s most distinctive journalism and ambitious projects. The Attack, an investigative series she conceived of and edited about the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol, won a George Polk Award and a Toner Prize for Excellence in Political Reporting and was part of the package recognized with the 2022 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. When she was National editor, the department won two Pulitzer Prizes in 2023, one for National Reporting and another for Feature Writing. Under her guidance, The Post published a ground-breaking series examining the role of the AR-15 in America that won the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting. That award marked The Post’s sixth Pulitzer win for National Reporting in 10 years.Matea joined The Post in 2013 as a national reporter covering money in politics. In that role, she documented the aftershocks of the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision, exposing the growing influence of wealthy donors on national politics. Before that, she worked as a reporter at the Los Angeles Times for more than 15 years, covering two presidential campaigns, California politics, Los Angeles City Hall and New York television media, among other beats.
