Throughout the internship the candidate had hands-on daily experience with working in a fast-paced and innovative scientific research surrounding, with an opportunity to learn valuable practical skills required in a scientific research laboratory as well as skills related to effective teamwork and problem solving.
  • Josip Juraj Strossmayer University Of Osijek
    Student Researcher/Msc Thesis
Josip Juraj Strossmayer University Of Osijek Feb 2017 - Jun 2017
    Croatia
Thesis title: The preventive effect of L-arginine against the oxidative damage and crystallization in the cell model of distal kidney tubule oxalate urolithiasisMentor: Doc. dr. sc. Martina Smolić dr. medSummary: The thesis' focus was using cell culture and viability testing to determine the positive effect of L-arginine on the oxidative damage caused by oxalate crystals in the distal kidney tubule tissues. The cells used were Madin-Darby canine kidney cells (sub-type 1) and the results showed a greatly higher viability and endurance of cells treated not only with sodium-oxalate but also co-treated with L-arginine, which successfully prevented the oxalate from damaging the cells and ushering them into apoptosis (usually caused mainly by the increase of reactive oxygen species (ROS) which starts the subsequent signalling pathway leading to the cell-death occurrence). In conclusion, L-arginine showed a very favorable anti-oxidant effect on the distal kidney tubule cells and proved itself to be a promising substance to research further in regards to these effects.
