• Provide materials engineering guidance and consultation to many space programs including characterization, testing, interpretation and application to ensure compliance with various space industry requirements and NASA standards.

Materials Technology:• Lead in-house material characterization techniques and testing, including all things related to Instron, stress/strain properties, creep/relaxation behavior, and many other mechanical performance metrics for all kinds of materials, parts and sub-assemblies.• Other equipment responsibilities include the C-Therm Trident to measure thermal conductivity, FTIR, optical microscopes and profilometers.• Research, quantify, test and utilize many properties of plastics, metals, adhesives, rubbers, foams and fabrics to understand and solve numerous materials related issues to achieve functional, cosmetic, and performance goals for new products.• Designed and built a uniquely operating and custom test fixture to simultaneously measure a material's damping properties (young's modulus, shear modulus and tan delta) across the human audible spectrum in a matter of seconds. See publications below.• Dabbled in some FEA work now and then - Ansys Mechanical.Projects and Data Management:• Collaborate with many product teams and engineers on material selection and design, including ME, CMF, ID, QA, PKG, MFG, Tooling, Radio, Antenna, Reliability and EE.• Collaborate with material suppliers to develop, identify and troubleshoot material technologies.• Created and manage the Confluence work tracking processes and document reporting systems for various hardware teams.• Manage the material properties databases and their use with the FEA teams.• Created and led the "Capstone" projects as a collaboration between senior year UCSB university students and Sonos (4 years).• Was the hardware/team lead (now in a materials research and development role) for an Advanced Development project focused on a revolutionary new type of loudspeaker. Two working prototypes delivered on schedule, project is now moving into a higher TRL.

Industrial and mechanical design from concept to creation.+ Worked on the creation, design and engineering of a new kind of digital pen.+ Assisted in the concepting and general technical operation of various kinds of solid fuel stoves.

+ Researched and assessed new materials for use in BlackBerry smartphones and tablets, including the PlayBook, Curve, Bold, Z and Q series.+ Developed techniques for assessing the creep, peel, and impact performance of adhesive tapes    including PSAs, glues, and thermo-bonding films.+ Studied damping properties of plastics, elastomers and soft polymers using DMA and other in-house methods.+ Studied various hydrophobic coating technologies, including permanent and removable coatings.+ Investigated bonding and environmental degradation of TPSiV materials.+ Examined the resistance of plastics and coatings to sharp impacts using custom-designed machinery.+ Was the primary engineering lead for more than 300 P&C cases for Legal Dpt, managed the triage, examination, distribution, analysis and final reporting of all incoming physical items for each case.+ Investigated various counterfeit items with Legal Dpt.+ Designed, created and maintained an internal materials property database.+ Created a 'green' recyclability analysis and report for all current smartphones.+ Provided materials advice to CMF, ME, Reliability, Global Repair, QA and Manufacturing teams.+ Assisted in the general research of many materials, including coatings, elastomers and   thermoplastics (PC, PC/ABS, PMMA, PA, PU, TPSiV, various glass-filled resins, metals and glasses).+ Filed 8 patents related to mechanical and industrial designs.
