S. Mathavaraj is a space scientist in the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). He earned his Bachelor of Engineering in Aeronautical Engineering from Hindustan College of Engineering, Anna University, Chennai followed by Master of Technology in Aerospace Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. He completed his Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. His interest in Space Dynamics made him pursue his career in the Flight Dynamics Group at the U. R. Rao Satellite Center (URSC) of ISRO. He is the space trajectory designer for ISRO’s landing missions. Furthermore, his notable space research contributions include advanced guidance techniques for satellite formation flying and soft-landing missions, robust control of reusable launch vehicles during re-entry, and autonomous landing-site detection on asteroids using deep learning. Dr. Mathavaraj is a Young Associate of the Indian National Academy of Engineers (INAE). For his distinguished contribution to the space field, he received ISRO Young Scientist award for the year 2018, INAE Young Engineer award for the year 2021, IEI Young Engineers award for the year 2022 and Manohar Parrikar Yuva Scientist Award for the year 2023.
