Profile bio

About Mathew Hanson

Hi! My name is Mathew Hanson and I'm an aspiring Mechatronics Engineering student at the University of Waterloo. I love to learn, especially about new advancements in electromagnetic motor innovation, computer vision, AI and ML. I am currently working as an undergraduate research assistant at the Materials Interface Foundry at the University of Waterloo under the supervision of Prof. Yimin Wu and Lei Wang. I'm also partially responsible for leading the propulsion subteam at Waterloop where we design and develop novel modes of contactless electromagnetic propulsion.I've been a member of Waterloop's propulsion team for three semesters and have worked on various maglev projects involving Linear Induction Motors (LIM) and was even the technical lead of the team's new Linear Transverse Flux Motor (TFM) that couples levitation, guidance and propulsion. The new TFM was featured at the Waterloo Institute of Sustainable Energy AGM and the Canadian National Hyperloop Competition 2022 and helped the team win the propulsion and levitation award. As a member of the team I also got the opportunity to learn more about our electrodynamic wheels used to levitate our second mini-pod Gosling II. In my spare time, I enjoy hanging out with friends and going on adventures outdoors. I also enjoy learning/playing musical instruments, snowboarding, longboarding, watersports and camping. Feel free to reach out!
