PHS is an artic oasis situated in its own microclimate on geothermic ground that has been used by locals for generations. This ground provides for excellent growing conditions unlike most of the land in the Bering Strait which is unsuitable for farming because of the short growing season and permafrost that covers the tundra. Due to this, nearly all food has to be shipped in via barge or plane which results in higher food prices as well as vegetables that are not as fresh as they could be because of the massive journey they have undertaken to travel hundreds or even thousands of miles from farm to table. The farm at PHS has a main goal to provide food security to the Bering Strait residents by offering high-quality nutrient-dense foods at a reasonable price.As Farm Manager, I guide all activities related to the garden during the growing season from May to September in Nome, AK. This includes planting, maintaining, and harvesting the garden as well as distributing produce and completing farm infrastructure projects such as building a greenhouse and a half-mile irrigation pipeline. During the offseason, I work with the PHS team to plan the next season's garden, work on the annual farm plan, write grants, and focus on ways to make our food more accessible to locals.Grants written and funded:- Growing Justice Fund, $180K – Submitted 4/1/23 – (Agriculture Supplies, Refrigeration Units, Salaries)- Rural CAP Thriving Communities Grant, $94K – Submitted 4/30/23 – (Agriculture Produce Distribution, Freight to Villages, Produce Markets, Salaries)- Rural CAP Grow OFF Grant – Food Forests, $59K – Submitted 3/1/24 – Pilgrim Hot Springs Food Forest (Fencing, high tunnel, trees & berry bushes) - APU Soil Health Grant - $5K - Submitted 3/15/24 – (Soil amendments and garden supplies)
