Industrial TraineeSyngenta Sep 2023 - Sep 2024Warfield, England, United Kingdom• Provided scientific and technical support to conduct cell-based in vivo, leaf disk in vitro and whole plant in vivo assays conveying the bioavailability of novel agrochemicals in common crops, weeds and fungal populations. • Collaborated with project leaders, to set operational priorities, establish internal networks and review protocols for efficiency whilst ensuring compliance with health, safety, and environmental (HSE) standards. • Assays primarily investigated absorption and metabolism on Zymoseptoria tritici (Septoria leaf blotch), Zea mays (Maize), Triticum aestivum (Wheat) and Amaranthus retroflexus (Red-rooted pigweed). • Absorption and metabolism data was primarily quantitated via an LC-MS approach to identify metabolites and characterise loss-of-parent compound. • Metabolomics: Identifying changing endogenous metabolite signals of fungicides in Zymoseptoria tritici to uncover novel modes of actions using LC-MS and, MZmine 2 and 3. • Mapping translocation of commercial herbicide, Bicyclopyrone using chlorophyll fluorescence imaging.• Aiding the optimisation and automation of various assays for high-throughput. -
Research InternShanghai Jiao Tong University Jun 2023 - Aug 2023Shanghai, ChinaFrom June to August 2023, I interned at one of Asia's most prestigious universities, Shanghai Jiao Tong University under the School of Life Science and Biotechnology. I worked with my supervisor, Dr. Litao Yang and PHD students Fan Wang and Zaobing Zhu for a lab-based project researching 'The Molecular Characterisations of GMOs'. In this internship, I worked on the Determination and Quantification of Transgene Copy Number in GM Corn line: DBN9501 and GM Soybean line: FG72 using Droplet Digital PCR technology and Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS). The experiment was successful as based on the data we acquired using NGS, the copy number of transgenes (HPPD and 2mepsps) in the exogenous DNA insert of the FG72 GM sample was approximately 1 (range 0.90 to 2.14), suggesting there is only one copy of exogenous DNA insertion. Likewise, the data acquired using ddPCR, the transgene copy number ranges from 0.879 to 1.003 which translates to a GM content (%) range of 87.9% to 100.3% in the DBN9501 100% GM sample.These molecular-based lab approaches were used to delineate guidelines to generate molecular data for safety assessment that deemed a GM line 'scientifically robust' for commercial use. -

Research AssistantSingapore University Of Technology And Design (Sutd) Jul 2020 - Sep 2020SingaporeOver the course of 8 weeks in 2020, I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Massimiliano Colla of the Singapore University of Technology and Design as an Hardware Biological Agri-tech intern. An algorithm was developed by our team to provide optimal growth conditions for vertical plantation crops using sensor modules. These sensor modules were capable of measuring specific growth factors including soil pH, temperature, soil moisture content (%) and O2 levels. The modules across a specified time period will gather raw data of the plantation corps which would be analysed using the algorithm. After thorough analysis, this algorithm will provide steps for optimal crop growth, i.e., how growth factors can be altered. Additionally, drawing parallels from the optical coherence tomography, tiny cameras were placed near each of the module sensors to examine the daily progress of crop growth through high-resolution images. My team & I presented our product to Singapore's largest wheatgrass-mushroom agrotech company Kin Yan & the Singapore Food Authority. This research internship showed me the cross-applicability of engineering and biology that can be integrated into an industry such as the food and agriculture.
