Cost Student - Project Controls
This summer I contributed to CNRL by challenging myself to take on a multitude of roles across various teams in order to learn as much as possible.I played a key role in estimating and engineering designs for multiple tailings projects worth up to $700 million by using critical thinking and collaboration to improve designs and offer solutions to logistical and feasibility problems. I collaborated with engineers and estimators to understand the full scope of the projects at a high level and used past projects for benchmarking designs and takeoffs. In addition, I performed a detailed cost analysis on multiple lump sum construction contracts in the range of $5 million to $10 million, integrating material cost trends and historical data on material and labor. This improved financial forecasting and enhanced the estimating team's database, enabling more accurate present value assessments of project costs versus contract amounts. Also, I strategically crafted 10+ pricing tables for project bids to increase profit and safety while minimizing risk.Furthermore, I used enterprise accounting software to make journal entries related to accruing costs over the appropriate periods.Lastly, I contributed to the owners cost department by tracking contractor reports for labor, equipment, and material. I used a detailed excel spreadsheet to organize the info in a meaningful and effective manner. All in all, I achieved multiple goals that I set out for myself at the start of my internship, including:- Learn the ins and outs of the oil and gas industry, including oil sands operations.- Make industry connections, and impress my colleagues.- Enhance my analytical skills.- Visit the oil sands in person.- Challenge myself to make the most out of the opportunity by creating relationships to help out in as many ways as possible by attacking any and every task with a willingness to learn.
