About Mathew Mason
My current work is focused on early stage discovery to guide product roadmaps, leading a multi-national team of amazing designers, and scaling design operations across a product zone of 70 athenistas. Clinician Experience focuses on enhancing the core ambulatory workflows within electronic health records; from patient intake and running the visit, to maintaining the patient chart across multiple points of care. My approach to design has become rooted in finding the right balance between ambition and pragmatism. An education in human factors engineering and cognitive psychology internalized a methodical, human-centric approach that balances risk with evidence-based decisions. Ten years of consulting with Fortune 500 companies showed me how design can be a powerful catalyst within R&D and designers can be both creative problem solvers and change agents. Managing designers at athenahealth has pushed me to ensure design makes the most effective contributions to user value it can, even when release deadlines are unexpectedly short. These days I'm just as driven to deliver incremental, practical enhancements as I am to create a vision for how AI and machine learning should impact the platform.As a design leader at athenahealth, I have the opportunity drive process and organizational culture. I strive to maintain an environment of open and honest collaboration that fosters teaching and learning across disciplines. We all need a place where our professional growth doesn't exclusively depend on our day to day work. I hope to create space where we can all do our best work, and truly enjoy the time spent doing it.
