About Mathew Sloan

Hello! I’m Mathew, I hold a decade of experience in areas of forest policy, technology and conservation. My driving force is to find where traditional ecological knowledge connects with modern sustainable practices through learning, educating, and discussing with industry and local members. Throughout my undergraduate degree, I evaluated the current policies in the province of Ontario that concern the management of coarse woody debris. This led me to research Finnish, British Columbian and Iranian policies to gain further understanding of industry and management perceptions across different geopolitical landscapes. Later moving to British Columbia with growing interest in the literature and culture, I discovered the need to "experience the world" where I tackled new positions such as Operations Specialist, guest attendant at a men's shelter, and landscaping in the lower mainland. Through these experiences I learnt the value of assertiveness, the maintenance of good rapport with large working groups at various capacities, the respect and dignity of each human person, and the gift of life.On the environmental front, I have involved myself in areas of emerging forest policy and forest management practices, specifically in harvesting systems and technology. In 2024 I completed the TRANSFOR-M program, a transatlantic forestry masters where a small cut of the most cutting-edge students complete two masters degrees across two continents in two years, with no extensions. I have been sent to UBC (Vancouver) where I worked in the Forest Action Lab under the supervision of Dominik Roeser to evaluate alternatives of slash pile burning and create governmental policy suggestions for a decrease in carbon emissions and utilization of harvest residue. And UEF in Finland, where I completed works under Kalle Kärhä to evaluate cut-to-length thinning operations in the province of British Columbia, a study sponsored and in partnership with Finnish forest manufacturing company Ponsse. When not studying, I find joy in participating at the Linnean Society of London discussing taxonomy, Foraus a Swiss Forum on Foreign Policy to discuss the importance of environmental preservation and sustainable systems, and reading poetry I write for environmental change to the internet world.I am open for communication at your convenience, please email me at msloan.mgmt@gmail.com or message me directly on this platform. If considering a new employee and think I would be a good fit, do not hesitate to reach out. I am currently available on a project basis.

    Lighthouse Keeper
Canadian Lighthouses Of Lake Superior Jun 2017 - Sep 2017

Lighthouse keeping had always been a goal of mine and as a young undergraduate student I was surprised to hear that the CLLS were offering an opportunity to live and work for a summer at the lighthouse on Porphyry Island. I was able to gain experience engaging donors, board members and volunteers in current projects and put in place a celebratory event in cooperation with the Canada Trails event happening near the end of summer. A great highlight of this experience was coordinating the Thunder Bay local book club day trip to Porphyry after they had read a Lightkeepers Daughter, to their surprise I had Mrs. Pendziwol, the author, join them for the experience.
