Mat Stage is the visionary young man responsible for more than a decade of successful operation of the Chautauqua Belle, an authentic stern-wheel steamboat that was destined for the scrap yard before Stage stepped in. With a little hard work, a lot of help, and a dedicated fan base, Mat has ensured this sternwheeler steamboat time machine will remain on the waters of Lake Chautauqua for another generation.Not stopping with the Chautauqua Belle, Mat began his international sea experience working the bridge aboard a 1,133ft Q-Max class LNG tanker as part of his sea term, a requirement to earn his unlimited tonnage license. Shortly after Mat completed his contract aboard the super tanker he gained his officers license and was recruited by an ultra luxury cruise line sailing the world, claiming the title of being the first American Officer to work for this cruise company in its history and has since been progressing through the ranks over the years. In addition to his own hard work, Stage is quick to point out that he has received countless hours of help, support, hard work, and advice from many individuals. “The Chautauqua Belle isn’t just a success story for me,” Mat points out, “but for the whole community. She wouldn’t be running today if it weren’t for all the dedicated support I have had these past years. I owe more than I will ever be able to repay to my grandparents. I also owe a debt of gratitude to every passenger that steps aboard. As much as my family and I love the Belle, we wouldn’t be able to take her out if it weren’t for those people that come back, year after year, to go out with us. I try to make sure that each person who buys a ticket is thanked at least four times before they leave our parking lot." Stage's ultimate dream in life is to reach the rank of Captain for a major cruise line, but no matter where he ends up, Mat has made a promise that he will continue to keep the Chautauqua Belle on the waters of Chautauqua Lake in western New York.
