To support Mali Red Cross Society (MRC) in the implementation of the combined Disaster Preparedness & Programmatic Partnership Programme (PPP) in Mali (2022-2024) funded by ECHO. The project targets IDPs and Persons affected by multiple crisis (floods, droughts, conflicts, displacement) with multi-purpose CVA transfers, as well as other disaster risk reduction and disaster preparedness interventions in 4 Regions of Mali (Gao, Tombouctou, Ségou and Mopti). The project is achieved through a global agreement between ECHO and IFRC and implemented by Mali Red Cross in partnership with Spanish and Luxembourg Red Cross with Danish Red Cross as lead agency, while IFRC provides overall guidance and global consolidation. The surge delegate will support in overall coordination of consortium members in Mali. The Disaster Preparedness (DP) component will especially focus on peri-urban service provision for displaced populations, which together with already existing activities in CASH and Voucher Assistance (CVA) must be well integrated. There is a need to find an equilibrium between immediate CVA support combined with a more long-term resilience approach, where transversal components like climate and environmental consciousness is built into the response and where cross cutting components like “Community Engagement and Accountability (CEA)”, “Psychosocial Support (PSS)” and “Protection, Gender and Inclusion (PGI)” are parts of an adapted approach.The surge delegate will have the responsibility of ensuring efficient coordination of the support aspects (logistics, finance and administration) of the project internally, as well as ensuring coherence with other responses from MRC and external partners. This includes close collaboration with other ECHO-funded projects within HIP and RRM during the interim phase.

The private sector plays an essential role in resilience building and disaster risk reduction. As a major player in the national and international economy in both value creation as well as job creation, their practices vastly impact the vulnerability of communities and economies. I support the program management officer working with the ARISE network on risk informed investment and business practices. Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) make up between 60-90% of private sector job creation depending on location. They are incredibly vulnerable to disasters and shock and around half of SMEs don't recover again after disasters hit. I am working with the program management officer in the development of a report aimed at decision-makers on SMEs and how they are affected by disasters and what the opportunities are.I also work with the Children & Youth Major Group on implementing the Sendai Framework, catalyzing and empowering youth as drivers of innovation as well as building capacity.

My work was split into two categories: rural resilience and urban resilience.Working on rural resilience in conjunction with small scale farmers and UNDP to diversify crops and livestock to minimize vulnerability to drought and economic shocks. Activities included solarized irrigation systems based on boreholes, quinoa introduction and subsidised stockfeed during drought season.Working on urban resilience with vulnerable people in selected neighborhoods and WFP in Bulawayo focused on rolling out an unconditional cash transfer program. The aim was to build resilience through supporting activities where the cash could function as a capital infusion.Development Officer working on urban and rural resilience, sustainable livelihoods, cash transfers and complex aid situations.
