My name is Dr. Mathieu Davis, and I am an aspiring impact investor in companies and industries addressing the social determinants of health, particularly sustainability issues surrounding food waste, upcycling, and the circular economy. I am a 2nd year Harvard Business School (HBS) student, serving as Vice President of Alumni for the African American Student Union (AASU) and a participant in HBS's Impact Investment Fund. During my first year of business school, I was a philanthropic investor through the Harbus Education Fund, where I performed due diligence (financial and social impact) and selected organizations to receive grants of up to $50k. Additionally, I served as a member of the Impact Investing Club and Black Investing Club and as a reviewer for AASU's annual Black New Venture Competition. I am also the co-founder of Davesi Investments, LLC, a real estate investment company that assesses and analyzes opportunities in the Philadelphia market with the potential to generate at least 20% ROI. As a founder, I manage a team of contractors, architects, and real estate agents, to renovate and develop modern homes. Before joining HBS, I was a published researcher with expertise in biomechanics, including orthopedics, gait kinematics, footwear performance, automobile product liability, and motor vehicle occupant safety and risk. In addition, I have a strong engineering and scientific background with a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Michigan. After finishing my Ph.D., I completed a year in South Africa as a Fulbright Fellow, where I researched knee arthroplasty and gait biomechanics at Stellenbosch University. While in South Africa, I participated in and led several community engagement projects with the local youth. The most meaningful of these was developing and implementing a LEGO Mindstorms after-school outreach program for the Biomedical Engineering Research Group. Throughout my career, I have emphasized giving back to my community through various volunteering and mentorship endeavors. For example, while working at Exponent as an engineering consultant for six years, I founded and chaired a DEI initiative for consultants and staff. I also served on the company's first DEI Advisory committee to the Chief Executive Officer. I founded the OMEGA Promise Foundation three years ago, a non-profit mentorship organization geared towards serving underrepresented minorities from K-12 and beyond. I continue to work tirelessly in my community to help at-risk youth and strive to be a more informed and outspoken advocate for the voiceless.
