At that time, Monitor magazine had a unique approach to testing computer equipment in Slovenia. We were inspired by the world's major computer magazines. My tasks included:✅ Keep up to date with the latest developments in the IT industry.✅ Establishing and maintaining contacts with IT equipment manufacturers and distributors.✅ Acquire interesting pieces of hardware for testing.

My responsibilities:✅ In the first 2 months on the job I upgraded the IT infrastructure in the company. ✅ Migrated to then-up-to-date Windows Server and implemented Microsoft Exchange mail server and SQL server.✅ Systems administration of Windows and Linux servers.✅ Daily user support.

Responsible for complete server migrations, which included migrating Microsoft SBS line of products to much more modern platforms like Microsoft Server 2012 R2 and Microsoft Server 2016 and migrating their on-premises Exchange mailboxes to Office 365.✅ We did a lot of Office 365 migrations. Focused on moving existing clients to Office 365 Business packages or Exchange Online. ✅ Office 365 sales and raising cloud computing awareness. Attracting new clients and migrating their existing POP3 and IMAP mailboxes to much better Exchange online, part of Office 365 suite. I strongly believe that the Office 365 ecosystem is one of the best product suits there is.✅ Helped other smaller Microsoft partners who struggled with Office 365 sales.✅ Managing servers of clients which included active monitoring, updating, and servicing.✅ Taking fire out when crypto viruses stroke. That, unfortunately, included paying those hefty fees to criminals who had encrypted the data. ✅ Which lead to figuring out as bullet-proof-backup-solution as possible. My usual bullet-proof backup solution consists of a Synology NAS device and Veeam software products.✅ Raising security awareness. Why not click on everything? Why not trust every mail we receive? Not everybody knows those basic survival tactics in the modern cyber world.💡 Many times end users have uncommon solutions to common problems, which can lead to new uncommon problems. I started in mid of August and on the very second day, my boss went on a 14-day paid leave. IT was a 2-men department which meant I was thrown into the deep water and left to swim. This is how I felt when the most annoying employee - every company has someone like that - came at me.Some highlights:✅ Keeping the 100 or so employees of the company as happy as possible by making their computers work like well-oiled machines.✅ When I arrived, the mailboxes were only 300 MB big. We upgraded the mail system and the users were happier.✅ Every year the management of the company had a budget for new IT equipment spending. Well, money had to be spent and I was given the task to source exactly the things we didn't need because every user wanted to have his/her own printer on the desk. The things that we did need were usually labeled as "purchase postponed until next year".✅ These were the days when LCD screens were starting to be bought, and server-wise we were somewhere around Windows Server 2003 and towards the end of my service, Windows Server 2008 and Exchange Server 2007. Nice pieces of software.✅ In these years some companies - my company included - were just contemplating whether they needed a good website. But in the end, we made a good website.✅ The lack of budget for proprietary software has made me a big fan of open-source projects.✅ Information security has not been talked about much at the time, much less taken seriously. Before I left, I wrote a rather long report on the state of IT security in the company. I hoped that it would be read by the members of the board of directors.
