Research Engineer and Team Leader at a single cell sequencing facility at SciLifeLab and Karolinska Institutet. My specific tasks included user guidance on sample preparation at the start of a project, processing the user samples from cell suspension up to sequencing data QC, and invoicing after project finish. In addition I had my own research projects involving setting up new methods at the facility. I also performed laboratory maintenance tasks such as ordering, chemical handling, writing risk assessments etc.

As a Lab Manager I was responsible for the wetlab including eight PhD-students and Post-Docs. I organized storage and ordered plastics and reagents. I was also responsible for the lab safety when it came to performing risk assessments of chemicals and protocols, correct waste handling, GMM-handling, teaching new staff about the lab safety rules, chemical storage etc. In addition I was heavily involved in moving the entire lab to the new KI research building Biomedicum. The other part of my job included experimental work in the laboratory. I had my own research project as well as assisted in other peoples projects. The research topic was mainly cell metabolism, in specific regarding the effect of having a mutated p53 protein. My contributions resulted in 2 scientific publications of which 1 was a first name paper. The main experimental techniques that I used were cell culturing and western blot. In addition I performed a lot of cell manipulations such as transfections, si-RNA, as well as metabolic measurements using the SeaHorse instrument.

As a Lab Manager I was responsible for the wetlab including ten PhD-students and Post-Docs. I kept track of the supplies and ordered plastics and reagents, and I handled the invoices, as well as kept in contact with the suppliers. I was also responsible for the lab safety when it came to performing risk assessments of chemicals and protocols, correct waste handling, GMM-handling, teaching new staff about the lab safety rules, chemical storage etc. In addition I assisted in writing ethical applications for animal testing and GMM-work, as well as grant writing. The other part of my job included experimental work in the laboratory. I had a few projects of my own, helped the PhD-students and Post-Docs in their projects, and performed experiments for international collaborations. The research topics included Regulatory T cell differentiation, immune cells in Multiple Sclerosis and changes in immune cell transcription over time. The main experimental techniques that I used were blood cell isolations, RNA/DNA isolations, NanoDrop, Bioanalyzer, FACS, qPCR, NGS library prep and sequencing. I was responsible for maintenance and running the units HiSeq2500 sequencing machine. My contributions resulted in 2 scientific publications.

The main aim of this summer project was to optimise a PCR-kit for large scale PCR. I also worked in bsl3 lab cultivating HIV and investigating virus transmission from mother to child.
