Hello! I’m Matilda, archaeologist, journalist, and founder of the Archaeologist’s Teacup. I specialise in artefact analysis, public outreach in archaeology, and the communication of academic research through accessible platforms. My background is one of constant change; born in Scotland and raised all over the world. This experience has provided me with the ability to adapt quickly to new situations, for which successful communication is a key skill. It helps me to navigate the issues of engagement and interaction: How can you make a good impression? How can you convey the maximum amount of information in the minimum amount of time? How can you engage with people from different backgrounds while still remaining true to yourself? These questions (and the consequent answers) can also be applied to archaeological research projects. Archaeology is full of stereotypes (dinosaurs, digging, and Indiana Jones to name a few), and it is only by squashing these stereotypes and sharing what it is we really do as archaeologists that we can highlight the validity of archaeological research. If people don’t really know what we do, why should they be interested, or provide funding or resources? Consequently, if researchers don’t share what they are doing, how can we be sure that our work remains relevant and ethical?The past is not something that vanishes – it influences us in the modern day and can help us to find our way in the future.“It is important that we know where we come from, because if you do not know where you come from, then you don't know where you are, and if you don't know where you are, you don't know where you're going.
