Profile bio

About Mat Rutherford

I have a wide-ranging skillset with the ability to retain a 30k feet holistic view of the problem we’re solving, whom we’re solving it for, why we’re doing it and how we’re going to deliver while still being able to get into the detail without losing that vision. I believe in good quality UX outcomes for every project or initiative and building experience visions that the whole business can get behind. I understand the importance of the correct copy and micro-copy and can write my own or collaborate with others. I’m well versed in agile delivery and I believe in just enough to get to the next step. Sometimes wireframes need to be no more than a drawing on a whiteboard. I write my own epics and user stories and guide projects through discovery, wireframing & prototyping, build, testing and delivery. I set-up and conduct testing workshops every two weeks to make sure we are constantly discovering and validating what we are doing, whether it’s a user flow, wireframes, prototypes or production build. I make sure to engage our customer services regularly to make sure we’re aware of what our users have issues with, how they are being solved currently and what is coming down the pipe.I have been heading up my design team for a while now and I’m keen to expand that. I enjoy working with passionate, creative and smart individuals that challenge (in a good way) and present new and innovative thinking. One of my key strengths is mentoring and developing my teammates. I engage relevant stakeholders where appropriate and bring them on the journey.I’m an outgoing, clearly spoken, passionate practitioner of UX. My communication is excellent with great writing skills and storytelling techniques. I get involved in all levels of the company and am happy to help where I can because every touchpoint with the user needs to be considered within the experience.I’ve been working in the Fintech and the finance industry for a few years now with my most recent role in Data & Insights. Understand your users, figuring out the aspirational model and looking for the gaps between the current experience and the experience you’re aiming for. That’s where innovation lies.I believe in disruption that leads to innovation but the need to disrupt ourselves before someone disrupts us. I want to be in a place that respects and appreciates the importance of design and I want to be involved at a strategic level to ensure we’re solving the right problems the right way.

Ux Lead

Nab

I initially joined NAB as Design Lead on the Engage & Grow domain. I worked on several projects including Online Account Closing, Card Swap and our Personal Finance Manager service. I worked very closely within the Product team to align our thinking to make sure we were solving the correct problem for the correct reasons. I would then work on breaking down the bigger problems into smaller, more digestible pieces to allow us to deliver in true Agile. I created and conducted several rounds of usability testing which directly fed into the direction of the products. I pioneered several elements, particularly in PFM, including contextual tagging and filtering, and spend over time with specific merchants.I was a key member on the Financial Hardship project to make sure we were creating useful and valuable content and real, actionable, support for all NAB customers.Later I moved to the Protect What Matters Insurance team working on key pieces including internal solutions for NAB bankers to make sure they were providing customers with the correct insurance. I worked closely with NAB internal colleagues to align on our solutions and make sure we were truely solving the correct problems. I conducted benchmarking and competitor analysis to help plan out our offerings. I created and facilitated several workshop sessions with existing and non-customers to identify where the bank’s role should start and stop with its insurance products. I also worked closely with NAB’s insurance partner, Allianz, to uncover how we might work on better experiences for NAB customers.I regular engaged other teams and disciplines within NAB to bring them on the journey to create empathy and understanding for what we designing for. This was received incredibly well and helped to break down barriers between silos within the bank.At Frog, I continue to work and pitch with NAB exploring new opportunities and ways we can create valuable, human-centred experiences.

Mar 2021 - Feb 2023

Ux Lead

Sydney, Australia

I joined Pureprofile to head up the user experience of both our B2B platform and our B2C service.Initially focused on transitioning our B2B product from a managed service to a self service modelI have been instrumental in the design and development of our core pieces that we have delivered as part of our strategic direction.I head up a team of designers workingclosely with the product team where I define strategy, conduct analysis, facilitate workshops and usability sessions, work on user flowsand customer journeys, create wireframes, prototypes and design artefacts.Overseen by me, my team have developed a living design system that affords a more robust, consistent experience. Following an atomic approach our design system can be utilised by all team members to build bespoke screens easily and allows for speedy handoff to development.A recent key delivery was the new audience builder for our Campaigns application. Builtfrom the ground up I was fully responsible for the analysis, management of key stakeholders, requirement gathering, workshop sessions, content strategy, journey flow and design, and complete wireframe experience. My team and I then pushed visual design to create affordance and clarity where needed pulling from our living design system and feeding back into it. The new Audience builder has been successfully received and continues to be built upon as a key part of our data and insights product suite.Being a smaller company I have had to demonstrate my knowledge and skill in agile product delivery and have had to often step into a product manager role and write agile user stories, define the requirements, acceptance criteria, talk the product and technology teams through sprint planning, oversee the sprint and accept the task once through testing.

Jan 2019 - Mar 2021

Senior Ux Designer

I joined BT on a fixed term contract to work on two projects. The first was a brand new initiative connected to the Panorama platform. It was a new way for financial planners to get permission from their clients to make investments because of a change to business requirements. The nature of the interaction demanded that speed of request and response was integral. As a founding member of our new squad I was responsible for working with our product manager to research every touchpoint with our users, map customer journeys, create archetypes, sketch flows, outline user stories, create wireframes, usability testing, align visual design & copy and push through delivery into our live products. We delivered the project successfully and take up was huge. We got great feedback and it became one of BT’s key deliverables of 2018.The second project allowed people to claim on their super insurance much more easily. The project had been languishing for some time so I was asked to jump on and help deliver it. I helped reset the project and refine exactly what it could and should be. The very nature of the project required sensitivity as the people I wanted to talk to who had claimed on their super insurance in the past had been through very tough times so it was a learning curve for me and how to approach those sessions. I engaged professional claim requesters to help me with those sessions. They turned out to be very successful in informing our project and design direction. I shared these sessions with our squad and the effect they had were immense. They were also shared through other teams in the super business as a tool to bring improvement across the end-to-end process.I used those sessions to bring the project back on track, working closely with the PM and BA we delivered the first iteration on time. I handed over the project before my contract expired providing a solid foundation and I’m looking forward to seeing what comes in the future.

Ux Lead

Surry Hills

I manage a small, lean UX team to create user-centric, market leading experiences. A keen proponent of collaborative design I work closely within my local and international team of developers, designers and product managers.I am the Senior UX Lead currently working on two products. The first is Safedome which was launched late 2015 in Australia and the USA. Working closely with the Product Owner I was a key figure in driving the product forward. I was responsible for the bottom up design of Safedome including user research, persona development, storyboarding, journey flow and key interactions. I was also responsible for major UI decisions. I organise and facilitate usability testing sessions, communicate results throughout the company and discover pain points that need to be solved to improve the product. Safedome is now entering the second phase of its evolution. The second product is an exciting new concept that we are currently trialling with banks in Europe and Asia. I work closely with the banks and engage onsite with them and their customers to measure our products reception and identify areas of success and where improvements need to be made. From sitting in coffee shops, buying people their morning coffees in exchange for 10 minutes of their time to gather as many opinions as possible to sourcing testers in lab conditions, I believe its vital to get in front of your users; the real people that will be using your products. My daily responsibilities include organising and facilitating workshops within the company to engage as many people as possible in the UX process. I find this then breaks down barriers and everyone feels ownership of the product. I work closely with developers to discover early on if any limitations exist or platform specific issues may occur so we can catch them and a find an acceptable resolution.
