Electronics design, layout, and production for MIT eVent project - open source ventilators for the developing world and domestic COVID response.

Apr 2020 - Mar 2021

Postdoctoral Associate

Cambridge, Ma, Us

Industrial Cybersecuirty and Electric Machines for Transportation Applications. Used knowledge of electric machinery and control hardware to devise novel attacks on infrastructure. Designed, built, and tested switched-flux and surface-mount permanent-magnet electric machines.

Dec 2015 - Dec 2017

Ph.D. Candidate

Cambridge, Ma, Us

Developed a novel modeling method for surface mount permanent magnet brushless DC machines. Faster computation times and improved accuracy result in the ability to design by brute-force methods. Work is funded by the DARPA M3 program and motors are used in the MIT Robotic Cheetah in the Biomimetics Lab. Past projects include MVDC breakers, hydrostatic bearings, solar-tracking schemes for solar energy, offshore drilling and blowout containment devices, and collision avoidance for autonomous naval vehicles.

Jun 2011 - Dec 2015

Technical Consultant

Marina Del Rey, California, Us

Designed, programmed, debugged, and tested all prototype electronics hardware culminating in $10M Series-A funding round. Responsible for architecture and execution of prototype electronics, including a large ultrasonic phased-array transmitter, piezo energy harvesting receiver, optical tracking system, and beamforming algorithm.

Jun 2012 - Apr 2015

Technical Consultant

Developed embedded control system for the Mule II platform, a ~50-hp, 300 lb, hybrid-electric, tracked vehicle intended for military use. Technical areas include Lithium-Ion battery management, engine control, electrical system architecture, various intelligent navigation schemes, and general electronics hacking.

Apr 2012 - Apr 2014

Engineer

Colorado Springs, Co, Us

Worked in the Concept Engineering Group. Primary client was the Missile Defense Agency. Tasks included system analysis, high-level-concept design, and modeling, simulation, and detailed design of concepts and individual subsystems. Concepts ranged from sensors to sensor platforms to missile systems to directed energy weapons. Design work included detailed guidance, optical, electrical, and thermal system design of hardware that has been proven on the test stand.

Apr 2006 - Jun 2013

Technical Consultant

X Energy

Modeled and simulated a small, modular nuclear plant. Most work was performed in MATLAB Simulink. Tasks included modeling of turbomachinery, electric machinery, and heat exchangers. Models were then incorporated in a system model to simulate and develop control schemes for plant dynamics, as well as to optimize steady-state performance.
