About Matt Barton

Following fun, educational, and creative opportunities in radio in both the on-air and business sides of the industry as well as rewarding experiences in public relations and professional strategy, I accepted a teaching position at Southern Utah University in order to raise our children closer to family. Since that time, I have taught 18 different courses, many of which I created and ascended through the ranks to full professor, including several years as the Graduate Director for the MA program in Professional Communication. Currently, I am serving as the Department Chair. My teaching philosophy helps students learn to think critically/strategically and provides methods for them to apply their learning. I work with clients whenever possible to make the classroom experience hands-on and resume building.

    I manage an active department of 15 full-time faculty and staff, plus a number of adjunct and graduate teaching assistants. We serve more than 270 declared undergraduate majors across four emphasis areas as well as more than 100 graduate students in our MA program. This supervision includes fiscal oversight of all budgets (with help from my hardworking office manager), class scheduling and maintaining student lab facilities including a 10,000 watt FM radio station (Thunder 91), SUTV (producing sports for ESPN+), an online news operation (SUU News.net) and a monthly news magazine (University Journal) as well as two brand new student labs: Visual Communication Research Lab and the Social Brand Lab that will help students work with clients from the community, state and region. On top of these duties, I am an active scholar who enjoys studying communication message design and the impact these messages have on people and organizations.
